Hawaii, Wells, Fargo & Co.'s Express, Paid, brown Hawaiian frank on 1882 5¢ Garfield entire used as unaddressed part paste-up, canceled by purple "Wells, Fargo & Co., San Francisco" company oval date stamp, Very Fine. Meyer-Harris No. 343.

Hawaii, Bush & Co., red truncated box handstamp reading "Forwarded Via Panama, By Bush & Co., Lahaina" on backflap of 1850 cover to Harrisburg, Pa., entered the U.S. mails with orange "San Francisco, Cal., Aug 17" cds and matching "40" rate, forwarded to New Haven, Ct. with "40" rate crossed out, blue "Harrisburg, Pa., Oct 8" cds and boxed "Paid 5" rate handstamp; minor edge toning, Very Fine, ex Ishikawa.
Estimate    $1,500 - 2,000.

AN EXTREMELY RARE LAHAINA FORWARDER MARKING WITH ONLY TWO EXAMPLES RECORDED.

According to Gregory's Post Office in Paradise, Bush & Co. was formed by Alfred W. Bush and Charles P. Robinson in 1850 but dissolved in 1851 after Bush died in October of that year. Bush had first joined with James Makee and Jules Anthon while they were in Lahaina. Bush & Co. were commission merchants and ship chandlers. The "Via Panama" within the company handstamp meant it was sent to San Francisco where it was put into the United States mail to go to the East Coast via Panama.

Sent aboard the American bark "Montgomery" from Lahaina on July 24th and arriving in San Francisco on Aug 15th.

"Forwarded by U.S. Consul, Sandwich Islands", magenta manuscript endorsement at top on lengthy 3-page folded letter datelined "Bark America off Honolulu Harbor, May 1st, 1846, 5oclock, P.M." to Edgarstown, Mass., interesting letter regarding waiting to sail after chronometer being fixed, several deaths at sea, schrimshawning, sending of letters, etc., entered the U.S. mails with red "New - York, Ship 7cts, Feb 1" cds, faint pencil "Recd Feb 3d, 1847" on face; some light soiling and minor splitting along folds, still Very Fine, a very rare U.S. Consul forwarding usage, only two other examples are recorded by Fred Gregory.
Estimate    $1,000 - 1,500.

The United States Consul at Lahaina acted as a forwarding agent for United States Citizens aboard ships. Giles Waldo, the Vice Consul at Lahaina in 1846, used this manuscript mark to indicate he forwarded the letter in his official capacity.

Sent aboard the American ship "Niantic", departing for New York on August 17th, 1846 and arriving on February 1st of 1847.
