Lot 23    

Queensland, 1866, Recovered from Robbed Mail (From Taroom), magenta manuscript notation on reverse of legal size O.H.M.S. cover to the superintendent of telegraphes in Brisbane, with "Electric Telegraph Station, Taroon 11th Jany 1866" at lower left and "Vouchers" notation above, franked with 1865, 2d blue strip of four tied by "152" barred oval handstamps, reverse with "Taroon, Ja 11, 1866" origin cds, additional pencil "Recovered from robbed mail. Taroon. 1866. R. Hwatt" docketing on front; cover roughly torn open, most certainly executed by the robbers, Fine, a rare robbed mail cover, likely perpetrated by a bushranger.
Estimate    $1,500 - 2,000.

There where several bushrangers operating during this time period in Queensland. One of the closest to Taroom (and likely the perpetrator of the robbery) was James Alpin McPherson, known as the Wild Scotchman and infamous for mail robbery. In early 1866, McPherson twice held up the mail delivery between Ipswich and Nanango and in the area on March 30, 1866, McPherson was captured at Monduran Station, 13 km north of Gin Gin.

South Australia, 1908, 1d carmine on white, Commemorative for Visit of American Fleet, multicolor design showing white fleet ship and the Australian and American great seals with draped flags, original Nov. 20th 1940 letter from S.P. bond to Mr. Roosevelt offering it for his collection; each with Harmer's From the FDR Collection handstamp; tiny pinhole in each corner, otherwise Very Fine and scarce card, ex-F.D. Roosevelt.

Tasmania, 1855, "Van Dieman's Land", 4d deep blue, imperf, Large Star watermark, full o.g., margins large to slight in at lower right, strong color, F.-V.F., a lovely example of this scarce mint stamp. Scott No. 6 $3,250.

Australia, (WWI Prisoner of War) 1916 Prisoner of War cover from Hungary to Australia, cover addressed to Liverpool German Concentration Camp, N.S.W., "Budapest, 16 Apr 29" origin cds, violet Hungary censor handstamp, British censor tape on back, "T" postage due handstamp obliterated in New York with purple ink and matching "No charge for postage Prisoner, of War Mail New York, N.Y." two-line handstamp struck, red boxed Australian censor handstamp, purple Liverpool Camp Officer, censor seal on back; light stain, Fine and unusual.
