California Express, Court Square, Boston, full clear strike of red shield handstamp on cover addressed to Augustine Hale in San Francisco, with matching "Paid" in oval handstamp, manuscript "Wells, Fargo & Co. via Nicaragua" endorsement at top, Very Fine, a very scarce and choice Wells, Fargo & Co. westbound usage, ex Polland.

Wells Fargo & Co., Columbus House (Sierra), blue oval handstamp (Leutzinger type 11-9) on 1870 3¢ green entire to San Francisco, Cal., black Haller type E printed frank; small cover nick at top slightly affecting frank, still Very Fine and rare, this small town never had a post office, ex-Tatham.
Estimate    $300 - 400.

Columbus House was established as a hotel/stage stop in 1851 by a group of miners from Columbus Oh. near the present day town of Strawberry Valley. By 1866, the owner was W.H. Davy who operated the hotel and acted as a Wells Fargo agent until 1879. Wells used the town as a stage stop from 1866 to 1899.

Wells Fargo & Co. Express, Dutch Flat, bold blue strike of oval handstamp on 1851, 3¢ Nesbitt entire to Nevada City, black company frank and 1860 docketing at left, Extremely Fine and choice, quite certainly one of the finest known strike of this Dutch Flat handstamp.
