(Georgia) Columbus, Georgia "July 26", red oval postmark with red manuscript date and matching "Paid 25" cent rating on 1831 folded letter to Washington City, Very Fine and early Georgia use.
Estimate    $750 - 1,000.

ONE OF ONLY THREE RECORDED EXAMPLES OF THIS POSTMARK IN PRIVATE HANDS.

Letter has some interesting political content including, "Dear Sir after returning you my warmest thanks for the interest you have taken in endeavoring to promote the interests of our new Town. I must take the liberty to suggest that there has (in my opinion) been great exertions used by some of the People of Tallahassee to influence the Engineer of the Ordnance Department against Ochesee…I am aware that the Tallahassians are anxious to divide our establishments on the River as they fear that if all our little towns should concentrate at any one point it would have a stronger bearing on the removal of the seat of govt which they are now in great dread of…".
