Apache Pass A T - 9-14-79 (Pima), manuscript postmark (Meyer 4, rarity 6) on registered cover, franked with manuscript canceled 1879 2¢ vermilion, pair + 3¢ green + 6¢ brown rose; some stains at edges and small tears, Fine and rare, earliest reported use of only two recorded manuscript postmarks.

Camp Thomas, A.T., Feb 24, 1879 (Pima), clear sharp strike of purple cds and star duplex (Meyer 1), tying 3¢ Banknote on cover to Washington D.C.; slight cover reduction and small corner repair at left, a Very Fine and choice strike, ex Jarrett.

Fort Apache, Arizona, Apr 8, 1890 (Apache), cds and star killer duplex (Meyer 4) used as forwarding postmark on cover from Battle Creek, Mich. to Los Angeles, Cal., cover addressed to Col. B.H. Grierson commanding the infamous 10th U.S. Cavalry and docketed in his hand at left, Very Fine.
Estimate    $150 - 200.

Benjamin Henry Grierson was a career officer in the United States Army. He was a cavalry general in the volunteer Union Army during the Civil War and later led troops in the American Old West. He is most noted for an 1863 expedition through Confederate-held territory that severed enemy communication lines between Vicksburg, Mississippi and Confederate commanders in the Eastern Theater. After the war he organized and led the Buffalo Soldiers of the 10th Cavalry Regiment from 1866 to 1890.

Lehi, Ariz., Dec 1, 1896 (Maricopa), cds (Meyer 3) with matching target handstamps tying 2¢ bureau, single and pair on cover to Haapai, Friendly Islands, "via San Francisco and Samoa" routing endorsement at left, reverse with San Francisco, Apia, Vavau transit and Haapia, Tonga receiving postmarks; stamp nick and cover a bit reduced at left, F.-V.F., a very rare usage to Tonga.

Yuma, A.T., Oct 30 (Yuma), blue cds (Meyer 2, rarity 5) with matching target handstamp tying 1861, 3¢ rose on cover to San Francisco, 1869 company receiving handstamp on reverse, Extremely Fine, one if not the finest example of this early townmark, ex Wiltsee, Wagner and Jarrett.
