Lot 1762    

Confederacy, Mars Bluff, S.C., 1861, 5¢ black, provisional handstamps on orange entire addressed to Mr. Thomas E. Gregg, Atlantic House, Beafort N.C., entered mails with partial "Florence S.C. Jul 30" cds and matching oval "Paid" handstamp; large cover opening tears; accompanied by six additional covers from this same correspondence, five mailed from Mars Bluff with two orange examples with the "Paid 5" struck in similar fashion without charge box notation that could be an implied indication of provisional use, the other four covers all have pencil charge box notations to the account of E. Porcher used from Mars Bluff (3) and Florence, Fine and interesting correspondence group, Listed but unpriced in Scott.; with 2009 C.S.A. certificate. C.S.A. Catalog No. MAR-SC-E01.

THE ONLY RECORDED EXAMPLE OF THE MARS BLUFF 5¢ PROVISIONAL ENTIRE.

The Mars Bluff provisional was prepared by handstamping envelopes with "Paid" and "5" markings that were also uses as stampless markings. It is consider a provisional use only when unused, under a postally used general issue, or mailed from another town. This Mars Bluff provisional was discussed in detail in the Confederate Philatelist, July-Aug 1986 (whole #232), pp. 97-101.

Confederacy, Camden, S.C., 1861, 5¢ black, provisional "Paid 5" rating handstamp under 5¢ green (1), margins to touched at right, manuscript cancelled, red "Camden S.C. Jan 6" cds at left; cover tear at top center, Fine.

Lot 1764    

Confederacy, Charleston, S.C., 1861, 5¢ blue, Type J, irregular margins showing parts of framelines to in, tied by "Charleston S.C. Jun 19 1862" cds on cover with red and blue 8-Star Confederate Flag patriotic design (CSA type F8-unlisted, same as F7-19 with Liberty cap except added star at center) to Pleasant Lane S.C., some toning and wrinkling, Fine.

ONE OF ONLY TWO RECORDED EXAMPLES OF A CHARLESTON POSTMASTER'S PROVISIONAL USED ON A PATRIOTIC COVER.

This late use of the Charleston postmaster provisional stamp was used just 11 days prior to the general postage rate increase to a standard 10¢ regardless of distance. Apparently due to a temporary shortage of Confederate stamps in Charleston at this time, Postmaster Huger brought out supplies of the now obsolete provisionals and placed them on sale. Other June 1862 usages are recorded including the Jun. 20th example offered in our Sale 59 lot 4247 of the Karrer collection.

Confederacy, Georgetown, S.C., 1861, 5¢ black, provisional marking and light strike of "Georgetown S.C." control circle handstamp on reverse of envelope, entered mails with "Georgetown S.C. Dec 21 1861" cds addressed to Miss Maria L. Middleton at Summerville S.C., F.-V.F. and scarce.

Confederacy, Savannah, Ga., 1861, 10¢ black, fine strike of "Paid 10" in oval and control marking on homemade gold and white wallpaper cover from the Manigault correspondence to Charleston S.C., partial "Savannah Ga. Nov 24" cds, Fine and rare wallpaper use.

Another cover from the Manigault correspondence made from the same gold and while wallpaper is the Savannah Ga. Nov 6 use with 20¢ bisect (13c), ex-Handy, Everett and Myerson.

Confederacy, Savannah, Ga., 1861, 10¢ black, clear strikes of control handstamp and "Paid 10" oval provisional handstamp on demonetized United States 3¢ red Nesbitt entire addressed to George C. Freeman at Savannah Geo., endorsed "Courtesy of Mr. C.D. Rogers" at lower left, carried privately outside the mails; partial flap, Very Fine, The only Savannah Provisional envelope we have seen using a U.S. 3¢ Nesbitt entire.

The Savannah Post Office would apply the provisional handstamps not only on plain envelopes, but customers could also have their homemade envelopes or in this case demonetized U.S. entires.

Lot 1771    

Confederacy, Savannah, Ga., 1861, 10¢ black, legal size orange buff cover with Savannah Ga. postmaster provisional handstamp and control marking that were crossed out in manuscript, bearing 5¢ green, Stone 1-2 (1), two singles, full margins to just in, tied by light strike of "Tudor Hall Va. Feb 7 1862" cds to Hon. Alexander Stephens at Richmond Va.; missing top flap as is usual for this correspondence and with docketing on back, some edge tears and overall wear, vertical file fold away from stamps, Fine and extremely rare use showing the previously prepared provisional superseded by regular postage.
