(Sierra) La Porte, Cal., Apr 2nd, manuscript postmark (SIE-910, R4) on fresh 1853-55 3¢ Nesbitt entire to Yuba City, manuscript "3/2/58" date cancelling indicia, with original Masonic Lodge member reinstatement notice, Extremely Fine.

Lot 157    

(Sierra) La Porte, crude black straight-line handstamp with matching straight line "W. Youlen" below (SIE-0920, R5) on cover to San Jose, with additional strikes of "Free" handstamp, Very Fine and choice, ex-Myerson.
Estimate    $1,500 - 2,000.

A WONDERFUL AND UNIQUE W. YOULEN FREE FRANK COVER FROM LA PORTE.

William Youlen was not a legitimately appointed postmaster but assumed the post as such for La Porte for a period of several weeks to a few months. It is believed this took place in the late 1850's. Several examples of his mark are known to have passed through the mail, a like example, also addressed to San Jose is located in the Wiltsee Collection. See Letter of Gold, page 310.

(Sierra) La Porte, Cal., 4 townmark covers; with first type cds (SIE-930) on 1855, 10¢ green entire, second type cds (SIE-940) in red on 3¢ (26) franked cover and in blue tying 10¢ (33) on small embossed ladies cover, and third type cds (SIE-950) on cover to Todd's Valley franked with 1¢ pair & single (63); some flaws, F.-V.F.

(Sierra) Rabbit Town, Cal., Nov 12th, manuscript postmark (SIE-1340, R4) on fresh 1853, 3¢ Nesbitt entire to the Enterprise Lodge in Yuba City, Extremely Fine, this is one of the finest examples of this rare manuscript postmark, pictured in Coburn's Letters of Gold.

(Sierra) Rose's Bar, September 14, 1850 (no P.O.) dateline on folded letter to Mount Vernon, O., entering the mails with red "San Francisco, 40, Sep 30" integral rate cds (Williams SAF-290), interesting mining letter about tough times most miners are having, talks of a river called the Trinity about 250 miles north as it might not be so crowded, if doesn't improve will come home, poor pay and high costs, etc.; minor file fold, Very Fine.

(SIS-4100, R4) cds plus additional strikes on stamp use with "Paid 3" arc handstamp etc., "Yreka Cal. Feb 21" cds (SIS-4130, R4) on 10¢ green (U40) entire to Washington Me., etc., F.-V.F. and interesting group.

(Solano) Benicia, Cal, April 29, ca 1850 (Pre-Statehood), red straight line postmark (Williams SOL-90) on folded letter to San Francisco with manuscript "12½ " for Pacific coast rate during 40¢ rate period, Extremely Fine, a classic California rarity and the finest known example of this rare straight line postmark, ex-Tatham.
Estimate    $2,000 - 3,000.

THIS CANCEL WAS ONLY A TEMPORARY CANCELLER KNOWN USED FOR 6 MONTHS UNTIL THE FIRST CDS ARRIVED BY MAY 1850. ONE OF THE FINEST KNOWN OF THE APPROXIMATELY 6 RECORDED.
