(Railroad Strike - Post Strike Covers - After July 11th) River Express Co., Stockton, Cal., dark blue franked cover to Stockton, entered the U.S. mails locally with 1890, 2¢ carmine tied by "Stockton, Cal., Dec 3, 1894" duplex postmark, missing part of backflap and stamp margin missing at right from cover overlap, otherwise Very Fine.

Lot 722    

(Railroad Strike - Post Strike Covers - After July 11th) (Wells Fargo & Co. Express) Transferred at Colfax, Cal., purple straight line handstamp on two entires from correspondence; first a July 14, 1894 franked entire from San Francisco with letter addressed to Miss L. Auger, Madam Auger's daughter at Grass Valley, second a July 16, 1894 franked entire to San Francisco and re-franked with 2¢ Columbian tied by San Francisco duplex postmark, Very Fine.
Estimate    $300 - 400.

Letter tells daughter that trains are running but due to congestion on the main line it is better to take a stage to Marysville and ride the narrow gage. Letters were carried over main line to Colfax and transferred to a stage service for deliver to Grass Valley. Return cover from Grass Valley also transferred at Colfax to San Francisco.

(Railroad Strike - Post Strike Covers - After July 11th) Wells, Fargo & Co's Ex., Los Angeles, Cal., Jun 1894, S.A. Butler, Agent., provisional frank handstamp with matching purple straight line "Frank" handstamp on 1887, 2¢ green entire, carried by Wells Fargo from Los Angeles using the railroad and placed in the U.S. mails with "Kansas City Mo, July 14, 1894" duplex postmark, for delivery to Vermont, possibly used from L.A. on the first day after strike, Very Fine, ex-Myerson.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

A very rare usage as this is the only known usage of a provisional frank outside of California and the only known usage on a transcontinental cover.

(Railroad Strike - Post Strike Covers - After July 11th) Wells, Fargo & Co's Express, San Diego, Cal., Jul. 15, 1894, red oval handstamp with change in manuscript, on unaddressed 1887, 2¢ green entire (internal Wells, Fargo & Co. usage), conjunctive black frank (WFE-060) at top, purple "Wells, Fargo & Co. Express, San Francisco, Cal., Jul 16" oval receiving date stamp; some light soiling, otherwise Very Fine.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

On a San Diego franked post Railroad Strike cover dated July 14 and then changed to July15, 1894 to San Francisco. After the strike the rail line were not clear of traffic. The San Diego Office thinking they could place mail on a train departing July 14 stamped letter as such only to find that mail would not leave until July 15.
