Colorado Springs, Colo, Aug 13, 1898, machine flag cancel (American, Dial 9, Flag 4) tying 1¢ Trans-Miss, vertical pair on allover yellow and rose ad cover for the 6th Annual Colorado Springs Carnival Festival, to Davenport, Iowa with Elks Hotel corner card, reverse with allover text, Very Fine and attractive.

Lot 771    

Conejos, Colorado, Nov, cds on 1870, 3¢ green entire to Napoli, Italy, uprated with 1870, 1¢ ultramarine + 3¢ green, horizontal pair tied by target handstamps, red New York exchange cds and receiving backstamp; tiny margin tear in left 3¢ stamp, otherwise Very Fine, a very rare unlisted example of the single circle date stamp from Conejos, quite possibly unique, ex-Bauer.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

This is a confirmed territorial usage as the 10¢ Italian closed mail rate was in effect from 1871 to 1874.

Lot 772    

Conejos, Colorado, Jan. 5th, 1874, manuscript postmark on 1870, 3¢ green entire to Berlin, Prussia, uprated with 1870, 3¢ green (edge flaw) and manuscript canceled, manuscript "By closed mail" endorsement at top, red New York exchange cds and straight line "Insufficiently Paid" handstamp; cover a bit reduced with repaired edge nicks at left, Very Fine appearance, the only recorded territorial manuscript postmark from this post office, ex-Bauer.
Estimate    $400 - 600.

The 6¢ per half-ounce rate was for the direct rate via N.G.U. to Berlin, Prussia. This letter was marked "By Closed Mail" (7¢ per half-ounce), hence the "Insufficiently Paid" marking.

Lot 773    

(Denver City, Jefferson Territory), address on cover with "Sidney, Ioa., Oct 1" origin cds, franked with manuscript canceled 1857, 3¢ dull red, manuscript "pr U.S. mail" and "Via St. Joseph, Mo." endorsements, with original 1860 enclosure, Very Fine, ex-Dale-Lichtenstein, Kramer.
Scott No. 26    Estimate $300 - 400.

The resident of the goldfields, unhappy with the great distance to the Kansas Territorial Government, created their own Territorial government which became Jefferson Territory. The federal government did not recognize this action. A few items addressed to Jefferson Territory exist, but there are no postal markings with that designation.

Denver City K.T., Nov 12 1860, clear strikes of serifed "Tombstone" postmark (Jarrett 65) on fresh cover to Maine, with matching straight line "Paid" handstamp; cover reduced at right, Very Fine, an attractive example of the scarce Denver City Tombstone postmark, ex-Rogers.

Denver City, Kas, April 22 1861, double circle postmark on 1853, 3¢ Nesbitt entire to Connecticut, manuscript "Paid 10¢" refers to the express fee from the mining camps to Denver City, flap torn & part missing, Very Fine and rare, the rarest of all Denver City postmarks, ex-Persson.
Estimate    $750 - 1,000.

This double cds was intended for use during the interregnum between Kansas statehood and the formation of Colorado Territory, but apparently was not received until after the territory was admitted. Very few examples are known.

Denver City, C.T., Dec 31, clear full cds tying 1861, 3¢ rose on cover to New York, with Rocky Mountain Law, Collecting & Real Estate corner card; stamp with small edge flaws, otherwise Very Fine, this is the first handstamp to place Denver City in Colorado Territory.

Denver, Col., May 11, cds and target duplexes tying slightly overlapping 1863, 2¢ black, two singles on cover to Big Thompson, Colorado, with original 1869 enclosure; cover with small reduction and light vertical fold at left, Very Fine, a lovely territorial usage from Denver, ex-Ray-Fosdyke.

Denver City Col/Advertised/Jul 23 66/Unclaimed, blue cds with matching "Unclaimed" straight line handstamp, on cover from Philadelphia to Julesburgh, C.T., redirected to Denver with manuscript notation "P.M. will please forward to Denver City if not called for in 10 days", along with manuscript "Due 3¢", a blue Denver backstamp dated Aug 29 may indicate when the letter was picked up or forwarded to the dead letter office, some minor cover staining, flap tear through Denver backstamp, overall Very Fine, ex-Persson.
