1859 (Mar. 28) New Orleans La. to Paris, France, blue folded cover bearing five 3¢ dull red (26) singles, two distinct shades, tied by four strikes of "New Orleans La. Mar 28, 1859" cds, red "New York 'Paid 12' Apr 5" credit exchange cds, carried by Cunard Line Niagara from Boston Apr. 6th to Liverpool arriving Apr. 18th, Calais (4.19) entry cds and Paris (4.20) arrival cds; couple short perfs, Very Fine, Prepaid 15¢ French treaty rate by British Packet with 12¢ credit.

1859 (May 21) New York N.Y. to Paris, France, light buff cover bearing 3¢ dull red (26) vertical pair and 12¢ black (36), both tied by multiple strikes of black circular grids, red "Supplementary Mail" framed handstamp, red "New York 'Paid 6' May 21" credit exchange cds, carried by Vanderbilt Line Ocean Queen from New York May 21st to Havre arriving Jun. 2nd, dark ultramarine Havre (6.3) octagonal datestamp and red "PD" framed handstamp, Paris (6.3) arrival backstamp; couple small stamp flaws with bottom 3¢ having small tear, Very Fine, ex-Baker; with 1988 P.F. certificate.
Estimate    $2,000 - 3,000.

THIS IS ONE OF THE EARLIEST STAMPED SUPPLEMENTARY MAIL USAGES, CARRIED ON THE MAIDEN VOYAGE OF THE VANDERBILT LINE OCEAN QUEEN.

This cover was prepaid 30¢ for two-times the 15¢ treaty rate plus 30¢ supplementary mail fee prepaid in cash with the correct 6¢ double-weight credit for American packet. The early stamped New York supplementary mail covers were usually cancelled solely by the type A style "Supplementary Mail" framed handstamps, this cover was one of the first cancelled by a separated canceler.

1859 (Jun. 22) Athens Ga. to Paris, France, cover bearing 3¢ dull red (26), horizontal strip of five, pair and single, all tied by four strikes of "Athens Ga. Jun 22" cds, red "New York 'Paid 24' Jun 28" credit exchange cds, carried by Cunard Line Europa from Boston Jun. 29th to Liverpool arriving Jul. 9th, French (7.11) entry cds and Jul. 12th arrival backstamp; small stain spot, some small stamp flaws, F.-V.F., an attractive double-weight use; with 1991 P.S.E. certificate.
Estimate    $500 - 750.

This cover was apparently short paid 3¢ for double the 15¢ treaty rate to France, but was accepted as fully prepaid with New York applying the correct 24¢ double-weight credit cds.

1860 (Aug. 8) Boston Mass. to Paris, France, cover bearing two 1¢ blue (24) singles, 3¢ dull red (26) and 10¢ green (35), tied by three strikes of "Paid" circular grids and matching black "Boston '9' Aug 3" debit exchange cds, "Boston Br. Pkt. Aug 8" exchange backstamp and framed "Short Paid" handstamp, carried by Cunard Line Canada from Boston to Queenstown arriving Aug. 20th, Calais (8.22) entry cds and black "24" decimes due rating handstamp; some perf faults from edge placement, F.-V.F.
Estimate    $300 - 400.

On the west bound trip, "Canada" was reported as leaving Halifax on Aug. 12th. She grounded in the Halifax harbor in the early morning hours of Aug. 10th and had remained there 35 hours. This cover was prepaid for only the single rate of 15¢, but was actually a triple rate with the United States debiting three-times the 3¢ American share.

1861 (Jul. 9) New York N.Y. to Paris, France, Vanderpoel correspondence cover with patriotic red, white and blue flag label bearing 1¢ blue (9) and 3¢ dull red (26) strip of five, all tied by strikes of red NYFM circular grid cancels, matching partial "New York 'Paid 12' Jul 9" exchange credit cds, carried by Cunard Line Europa from Boston Jul. 10th to Queenstown arriving Jul.22nd, red "Belg., Lille, 24 Juil. 61" transit cds and matching framed "P.D." handstamp, Paris (7.24) arrival backstamp, Very Fine, ex-Grunin.
Estimate    $1,000 - 1,500.

A SCARCE TRANSATLANTIC PREPAID CARRIER USE TO FRANCE.

Cover was prepaid 16¢ for the 15¢ treaty rate to France plus 1¢ carrier fee.

AN EXCEPTIONALLY RARE USE OF THE 5¢ OLIVE YELLOW 1861 ISSUE ON COVER.

As an indication of rarity, the 5¢ olive yellow catalogs $4,000 used off-cover. We have not noted any recent examples on cover offered at auction. This double-weight cover was prepaid for only the single rate and treated as fully unpaid.
