THIS IS THE EARLIEST OF ONLY TWO RECORDED USAGES OF THE KEAAU DUPLEX ON COVER.
Keaau, meaning "hindering current", was part of the Puna District on the Island of Hawaii operating 1899-1900 with Peter Lee as Postmaster. It was a camp for the Olaa Plantation. Current known usage: June 8, 1899 to January 17, 1900.

P.M., manuscript town postmark (801, 1RR) with "P.M." postmaster free frank designation above, at top left of stampless cover to Honolulu, blue "Paid" in oval handstamp, pencil docketing "1861, Lady Franklin letter" at center; partial bottomflap and reduced at bottom into address panel, Fine, a rare and Possibly Unique Early Postmaster Free Frank Usage From Keaiwa. Jane, Lady Franklin was an early Tasmanian pioneer, traveler and second wife of the explorer John Franklin. Her husband started on his last Artic voyage in May 1845, and when it was realized that he must have come to disaster, Lady Franklin devoted herself for many years to trying to ascertain his fate.
