Crossed Kahilis, Medcalf #5, unused 10¾" x 8¼" sheet with hand colored black, yellow and red Crossed Kahilis emblem, watermark; horizontal fold; accompanied by small piece with smaller Cross Kahilis emblem colored black, yellow and red on gray paper, stained, Very Fine, Medcalf $750.

This stationery was formerly thought to be printed only on an off-white paper. The cut square in this lot proves that a second type exists with a smaller Crossed Kahilis emblem on gray paper.

Crown on Cushion Royal Invitation Cards and Envelope, group of three invitation cards comprising 5¾" x 8" His Majesty card with gold border (Medcalf #10) to Mr. & Mrs. Spencer for a June 2, 1890 ball at Iolani Palace and original matching Crown on Cushion Royal 6" x 8-3/8" envelope (Medcalf #4) addressed to them, flap is torn; faulty 5¾" x 8" His Majesty card (Medcalf #12) with gold border and 5" x 6-3/8" Her Majesty card (Medcalf #11) with silver border, small faults, F.-V.F. and scarce group.

Chamberlain in black, 14 red wax seals showing Great Seal including Hawaiian Consul General Amsterdam and Hawaiian Legation Tokyo Japan, etc., some faults to wax seals, F.-V.F.

Royal Arms, Two Ring Border, colorless embossed Great Seal of the Kingdom on 6-1/8" x 4-7/8" Royal stationery (Medcalf #1) with handwritten letter reading: "Mr. Wyllie has the honor to thank Henry Pembergast Esquire for his kind consideration in attending to receive their Majesties the King and Queen and the ladies at their entrance at the Court House for the Fancy Ball of Last Evening, Rose Bank 29 November 1861"; light file folds, Very Fine and exceptionally rare, Medcalf $2,000.

There are only two recorded examples of this Royal Arms, Two Ring Border stationery, the example offered here and one example in archives.

Spencer to a Musical at Iolani Palace on May 6th; accompanied by 5" x 6½" envelope (Medcalf #1) with gold, red and black embossed Crown imprint addressed to Miss. L. Brickwood; some aging, F.-V.F. pair.

1869 (Jul. 23) Royal Invitation, printed invitation on 8"x5" Royal Arms, Three Ring Border stationery (Medcalf #11) by command of the King in honor of His Royal Highness, the Duke of Edinburgh at Iolani Palace, to A.S. Cleghorn, Very Fine, Medcalf $1,500.
Estimate    $1,000 - 1,500.

His Royal Highness The Prince Alfred, the Duke of Edinburgh (1844-1900) while in command of the "Galatea" began an around the world voyage starting from Plymouth on 24 January 1867. He made many stops including Australia landing at Glenelg, South Australia on Oct. 31st. Being the first member of the royal family to visit Australia, the Duke was received with great enthusiasm. During his stay of nearly five months he visited Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and Tasmania. On 12 March 1868, on his second visit to Sydney an assassination attempt was made but he survived and recovered to continue his voyage. He visited Hawaii in 1869 and spent time with the Hawaiian Royal family where he was presented with leis upon his arrival. A Royal Ball in his honor was held, for which this invitation was presented.

1883 Coronation Ceremony Royal Invitation, multicolored Royal Arms on Mantle invitation (205x146mm) in Hawaiian, Very Fine.

A WONDERFUL AND RARE EXAMPLE OF THE HAWAIIAN VERSION OF THE 1883 ROYAL INVITATION, THIS IS ONE OF ONLY TWO RECORDED EXAMPLES IN PRIVATE HANDS.

On February 12, 1883 one of the most grand and regal events ever witnessed in Hawaii was held at the recently completed Iolani Palace in Honolulu. Nine years to the day after his election as Mo'i, David La'amea Kamanakapu'u Mahinulani Naloiaehuokalani Lumialani Kalakaua was crowned in a majestic coronation ceremony.

1892 (Jul. 7) Royal Invitation, gold border Her Majesty Queen Liliuokalani card (209x153mm) for July 7th Ball at Iolani Palace to Mr. & Mrs J.H. Soper; accompanied by faulty original plain envelope, Very Fine.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

This invitation to John Harris Soper (1846-1944) is dated six months prior to his request as Commander-in-chief of military forces of the Provisional Government of Hawaii for Liliuokalani to yield to a superior force. Soper's calming influences prevented a violent and bloody overthrow on January 17, 1893.
