"Cincinnati 1st June 1801" (Northwest Territory), manuscript postmark with matching "17" rating on folded ALS of Daniel Symmes to Capt. William Clark, Louisville Ky.; worn folds, F.-V.F.
Estimate    $500 - 750.

William Clark was an American explorer, soldier, Indian agent, and territorial governor. A native of Virginia, he grew up in prestatehood Kentucky before later settling in what became the state of Missouri. Along with Meriwether Lewis, Clark helped lead the Lewis and Clark Expedition of 1803 to 1806 across the Louisiana Purchase to the Pacific Ocean, and claimed the Pacific Northwest for the United States.

Coshocton, Ohio, "Oct 7", reddish-brown scalloped rim stencil postmark with red manuscript date and matching "37½" rating on 1832 folded letter to Cincinnati Oh., letter turned upon arrival with Cincinnati Oct. 22nd cds back to Coshocton; cover edge faults and edge tears affect marking, still a Very Fine and choice strike of this rare fancy stencil postmark.

"Cuyuhoga Falls O", manuscript postmark and matching rating on folded letter datelined "December 15th 1842" to East Hartford Ct., apparently carried privately and entered mails with "Windsor Ct" straightline postmark and manuscript "Jany 11" date with matching "12" rating.
