Liberia, Monrovia 3 June 1837, docketing (non-contemporary) on inside of folded letter sheet to Rhinebeck, N.Y., entered the mails with red "New York, Jul 22" cds, matching straight line "Ship" handstamp and manuscript "14½" rate, endorsed "Care of Capt Keeler, Schr. Portia" at bottom left, Very Fine.

Liberia, Monrovia 22nd Sept 1839, dateline on 3-page letter written and signed by Governor Thomas Buchanan, to New York with red "Norfolk, Va., Jan 16" cds and matching straight line "Ship" handstamp, manuscript "27" rate and "pr Ship Jaludeo, Capt Waters" endorsement, letter with some interesting content…We have just closed the first session of our Colonial legislation under the new Constitution after transacting a good deal of important business, including the prohibition of ardent spirits, mentions his recent movement against slavers, etc., F.-V.F., a historically important letter by Governor Thomas Buchanan just after the first session of the Colonial legislation.

Liberia, Fair Hope, Cape Palmas, September 21st, 1841, dateline on 3-page folded letter to the Mission Rooms in New York City, manuscript "pr Brig Atalouto, Capt Laulin" ship endorsement and "6" rate, letter from a black American emigrant to Liberia who has taken up studies due to the Colonization Society and asking if there is anything he can do for the cause of civilization in Liberia, mentions being prepared to be a teacher in Kroo County and writes a fascinating story about saucy wood; some fold splitting, otherwise Very Fine, a very unusual origin.

Liberia, Monrovia Aug 13th 1842, dateline on folded letter to the mission rooms in New York City, entered the mails with blue "Philadelphia, Pa., Oct 10" cds, matching straight line "Ship" handstamp and "14½" due rate, endorsed "Per Brig Grecian (Capt.) Laulin" at bottom, letter from Dr. James Lawrence Day regarding request to guide missionaries to Croo but cannot due to a large immigration that will need his attention, advises if they cannot get another physician to Croo that missionaries should come to Monrovia, mentions Dr. Gile is in America and Dr Johnson in Bassa, Very Fine.

Dr. James Lawrence Day from Morristown, New Jersey became physician for the American Colonization Society to Liberia in 1840. Dr. Day spent three years in Liberia, 1840-1843, aiding in the welfare and success of the colony. In 1843 he served as the United States Agent to the West Coast of Africa.

Liberia, Monrovia 24th June 1844, dateline on fresh 2-page folded letter to the Board of Foreign Missions in New York City, entered the mails with blue "Baltimore, Md., Apr 5" cds, matching "Ship" handstamp and manuscript "20¾" rate, letter regarding starting a new school, incoming ship consignments and other church business including…Our ruling Elder Bro Wm Folks we as a church were oblige to disown him being found guilty of an immoral conduct by cohabing with a girl living in his family which charge he confesses without the least signs of contrition of soul, Very Fine.

Liberia, Settra Kroo, Nov 16th 1845, dateline on lengthy 4-page folded letter to the Foreign Mission Room in New York City, entered the mails with red "New - York, Ship 7cts, Apr 20" integral rate cds with additional manuscript "6" rate, letter with interesting account of the mission, mention the opening a female school, some unusual happenings with some of the colonist…Walter Lowie has got so in love with his native habits, that I fear he will never by of any service in advancing the causes of God. Oren K. Canfield is far gone in sin & Henthenism, etc.; some splitting along folds, F.-V.F.

James Eden to the Mission House in New York City, hand-carried to the U.S. where it entered the mails with red "New - York, 2cts, May 12" cds and manuscript "The politeness of Hon. Mr Semans of Liberia" endorsement, letter regarding Mr Semans and this eventual calling in to the office to relate the current news of Liberia, Very Fine, a very scarce hand-carried usage from Liberia and drop rate in New York.

Liberia, Sinoe, West Coast of Africa, April 8, dateline on ca. 1847 folded letter to Yarmouth, Maine, entering the mails with blue "Baltimore, Md., Jun 4" cds's, red Ship and "12" rate handstamps, endorsed "Per Liberian Packet" at bottom left, letter written by sailor who has just arrived after crossing the Atlantic, with details of the area around Sinoe, mentions Grand Bassa, etc., Very Fine, a rare usage from Sinoe.
