This stamp was discovered by the Rumsey auction firm and confirmed by Robert Gibbs in the fall of 2013.

ONE OF TWO KNOWN USED EXAMPLES OF THE G.R.I. 1914, 8D ON 80PF WITH SURCHARGE TRIPLED - ONE OF THE RAREST OF ALL NEW GUINEA VARIETIES.

Only fifiteen of these varieties were ever produced (ten from Gibbs setting 2 and five from Gibbs setting 10). This stamp is the only recorded used example from setting 2 and is position 3. Only one other used example has been recorded and is printed from Setting 10.
