1822 (Dec. 31) Annapolis, N.S. to Fredericton, N.B., folded cover with manuscript "Annapolis, 31 Dec/ 22" postmark and matching "4½" d.cy. rating across the Bay of Fundy, then St. John N.B. manuscript "7" d.cy. to Fredericton totalled to "11½" d.cy. due; minor erosion hole and some edge splitting, Very Fine, ex-MacDonald, Clark, Rathbun.
Estimate    $5,000 - 7,500.

ONE OF ONLY FOUR RECORDED MANUSCRIPT ANNAPOLIS POSTMARKS.

The four recorded Annapolis manuscript postmarks are dated 1804 to 1829. This cover is illustrated in MacDonald.

Lot 114    

1837 (Jun. 27) Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island to Fredericton, New Brunswick via Halifax, cover addressed to Major General Sir John Harvey (Lt. Governor of P.E.I. and from 1837 of New Brunswick), light strike of rimless "Prince Edwards Island" postmark with manuscript "27th June '37" dating and "8" rating, updated to "1N4" for double weight letter to Halifax, "Halifax N.S. JY 5 1837" transit cds, additional "1N10½" rating to Fredericton totalled to "3N2½" for 3 shillings 2½ pence due; receipt docketing at right, Very Fine, ex-Salmon.
Estimate    $300 - 400.

The round Prince Edwards Island despatch mark was used from July 11th 1834 to August 31st 1842. This Halifax cds is known used from November 20th 1830 to July 21st 1838.

1850 (Mar. 10) St. John, N.B. to Annapolis, N.S., datelined blue folded letter with red "Annapolis N.S. / Ship Letter" two-line handstamp, endorsed "by Capt Brown. March 13/50" at lower left to Annapolis N.S., matching red "Annapolis N.S., MA 10 1850" backstamp, manuscript "4½" pence cy. rating including 1½d cy. ship letter fee (valid from December 5th 1842), Extremely Fine and choice, ex-Clark, Rathbun; with 1992 Holcombe certificate.
Estimate    $7,500 - 10,000.

THE EARLIEST AND FINEST OF ONLY THREE RECORDED STRIKES OF THE ANNAPOLIS SHIP LETTER HANDSTAMP.

Of the three recorded strikes of the Annapolis Ship Letter handstamp, there is one strike in black dated January 4th 1857.

1856 (Apr. 11) Amherst N.S. to Coverdale N.B., forwarded to Hillsborough, cover bearing Nova Scotia 1851, 3d dark blue (3), four large margins, intense color and impression, tied by oval grid cancellation, matching "Amherst N.S., AP 11 1856" backstamp, by stage coach to Coverdale, Salisbury (4.12) backstamp transit, readdressed to Hillsborough N.B. with "3d" circular due rating handstamp, Salisbury (4.17) transit cds and Hillsborough (4.17) arrival backstamp, Very Fine, ex-Carr, Wood, Mayer, Wilkinson.
