Hawaii, (Maui) "Sandwich Is. Maui, on Board Ship Emily Morgan, Oct. 1853", dateline on 8 page highly descriptive letter from a whaleship anchored at Maui that reads in part, "Thinking of brief sketch of the method of capturing, killing, and taking care of a Sperm Whale would be interesting to you. And having my writing tacks aboard I will endeavor to give you a faithful description of the Modus Operandi: When upon cruising groundmen are stationed at the fore main & mizzen top gallant croptree on the look out for spouts which are caused by the whale in breathing sending forth cloud of spray from his spout hole which is situated in the fore part of the head. When a spout is discovered the look out sings out "There she blows". Captain asks "Where away" the look out gives him the direction and distance. And in a moment the Captain is at mast head. He soon makes out whether it is a Sperm Whale by the spout. Should it be cries "Call all hands! Get your boats ready" The boats are about 27 feet in length by _ width, sharp at both ends. The lines are coiled in tubs and are put in the boats. The harpoons are bent on the lines. and all is ready. When the ship is within proper distance, the Capt. Orders to "lower away". And all the boats are down in a twinkling. Each boat has a crew of six men, one of which is called boatsteerer, whose business it is to fasten to the whale, and an officer who is boat header who kills the whale…All are excite at the Header's "Cry out, Pull my hunters pull! There he lays like a log- Give way my hunters! I'll give you anything I am in possession of it we get him. Oh pull! Do pull! You shall have everything but my wife, do pull!!…", a Very Fine and interesting whaling letter with great detail.

Hawaii, (Maui) Waihee P.O., full strike of circular postmark (237.527, 1RRRR) on 1864, 2¢ rose vermilion, with additional target handstamp, small pinhole and clipped perfs at upper right, otherwise Very Fine, one of the finest strikes of this extremely rare Waihee postmark, with Only Five Strikes Recorded.

Hawaii, (Maui) "Wailuku P.O., Mar. 5", manuscript postmark with matching "Free" rating on gray folded letter datelined "Wailuku Mar. 3d 1851" from Rev. E. Bailey to Rev. D. Baldwin at Lahaina, letter discusses land matters; light horizontal fold, Very Fine, ex-Golden.
Estimate    $1,500 - 2,000.

ONE OF ONLY FIVE RECORDED EXAMPLES OF THE MANUSCRIPT WAILUKU POSTMARK APPLIED BY THE FIRST "UNOFFICIAL" POSTMASTER, REVEREND EDWARD W. BAILEY.

According to Gregory, the Wailuku post office was officially established in 1859. Prior to 1859, the Reverend Edward W. Bailey served as an unofficial postmaster. The postmark and "Free" rating are in the hand of the Reverend Bailey. The "Free" was not necessary since inter- and intra-island mail was postage-free by legislative order until 1859. All five recorded examples of this manuscript postmark are on letters from Rev. E. Bailey to Rev. D. Baldwin at Lahaina.

Hawaii, (Maui) Wailuku, Maui, Nov 18, 1889, clear strike of purple double-circle datestamp on cover with provisional manuscript "Paid" (MH 851, 1RRRR) rating to F. L. Stolz at Kahului, reverse with bold "Kahului, Maui, 19 Nov" cds (MH 282.011); no backflap, some light aging, Very Fine.

A RARE PROVISIONAL "PAID" STAMPLESS USE FROM WAILUKU BY INTERIM WAILUKU POSTMASTER J.M. LEE.

The provisional "Paid" stampless usages from Wailuku, Maui are known in November 1889.
