California State Telegraph Co., printed cover with illustrated Zeus corner card used as a paste-up on 3¢ entire (U58) entire with Wells, Fargo & Co. company frank and cancelled by blue "Wells, Fargo & Co., Sacramento, Jul 9" double-circle datestamp, addressed to Knights Landing Cal., pencil 1867 docketing; opened for display, F.-V.F. and unusual use.

Empire Ranch, Cal., Jan 30th, 1856 (Yuba), manuscript postmark (YUB-580) tying 1855, 10¢ green, type II, top margin single on folded letter to Natick, R.I., lengthy 3½ page enclosure datelined "Roses Bar", Very Fine.

Lot 1007    

Jackson, Cal., Apr 23 (Amador), bold cds (CAL-1280, unlisted for Amador) on small folded letter sheet to Geneva, Switzerland, manuscript "Paid 26" rating, red "New York, Am. Packet, May 30" and Paris transit cds's with manuscript "10" decimes due rate, partial receiving backstamp, Very Fine, a rare usage of the type Jackson postmark used in Amador county in 1855.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

This first postmark is known used between June of 1851 and July of 1852 when Jackson was in Calaveras county. This later usage in Amador, after Jackson saw two other postmark devices, is unlisted for this county.

Lakeport, Cal., Oct 3, 1883 (Lake), cds and waffle grid duplex (LAK-1080) tying 2¢ vermilion on gray & blue Bee-Democrat fancy corner card cover to Oakland, Very Fine and attractive.

Mormon Island, Cala., two covers, first with partial strike of oval postmark and dated "14 Mch" in manuscript with matching "10" framed handstamp rating to Portland Me., other with nice strike of oval postmark with manuscript "Dec 28" date and ms. "10" cent rating to Sebago Me.; small flaws, F.-V.F.

Lot 1010    

"Sacramento Oct 12 1848" (actually 1849), dateline on folded letter from Abner Mead to his wife at Harrison N.Y., entered mails with "San Francisco Cal. Nov 1" cds and matching "Paid" and framed "40" rating handstamp, interesting letter reads in part "I take this opportunity to inform you that I am well George is the same I have sent 62½ ounces of gold dust and it worth one thousand Dollars hear at sixteen Dollars per ounce and I want one of the boys to take t to Philadelphia to the mint and get all it is worth $20 per oz it will make $2.50 difference and that is worth the trouble…I have not got any letter from you since I left home… but I shall not be able to get your letter until next spring as I am going four hundred miles back in the country and shall not be able to get them out of the office if they do come…"; edge wear, Fine and interesting gold rush letter.

The writer has obviously docketed the wrong year, as the San Francisco cds was not introduced until August 1, 1849.

(San Francisco) Rail Road House, all over illustrated design showing View of the Hotel on reverse of 1859 cover to Massachusetts, franked with 1857 10¢ type V tied by San Francisco cds, some cover wrinkles, Very Fine, a rare San Francisco advertising design.

Santa Barbara, Ca., group of 5 covers from the Hobbs correspondence to North Berwick Me., each with "Santa Barbara Cal." cds and different ratings including "Paid" oval handstamps with ms. "10cts", "20cts" and handstamped "10", one with "Paid" oval and "10" handstamp and additional "DUE 10" handstamp, and last with "Paid" oval and ms. "20¢" crossed out and "DUE" handstamp with blue crayon "20"; mixed condition, F.-V.F.

"Saucelito, June 25th, 53" (Marin), dateline on 1853 folded letter to New York, carried to San Francisco & franked with 1851 3¢ pair (right stamp with corner clipped) tied by San Francisco cds, straight line "Advertised" handstamp with manuscript "1" applied in New York, F.-V.F., a rare item as this is the earliest recorded usage of postage stamps in Marin County.
Estimate    $300 - 400.
