(Baker) Auburn (Oregon), Dec 11 1866, manuscript postmark (Whittlesey 1, R 8) on cover to Sublimity, 1861 3¢ rose (s.e. at left) tied by pen scribble on the back, reduced at right, Fine, scarce eastern Oregon ghost town.

(Benton) Corvallis, O.T., Nov 1, manuscript postmark (Whittlesey 2, R B) on cover with 1857 10¢ green type II cancelled by pen stroke, to New Hampshire, "1858" pencil notation on the back, slightly reduced at left, light stain at left, minor edge wear, Very Fine.

Lot 1116    

(Clackamas) Cuttingsville, Oregon, May the 1st, manuscript postmark (Whittlesey 1, R 7) on 1864 3¢ pink entire, indicia uncancelled, Foster correspondence to Eagle Creek, accompanied by original 1868 letter from postmaster Ch. Cutting at Cuttingsville proposing the mails leave Portland on Saturday rather than Monday so that they might arrive in Cuttingsville and the other towns on the route sooner than midweek, cover reduced at right and a couple short edge tears at top, Fine.
Estimate    $150 - 200.

The Cuttingsville Post Office, which was the forerunner of the Union Mills Post Office, operated for seven years only 1867-1872 and 1873-1875. Scarcity Index 7 in Helbock's books.

(Clackamas) Oregon City, Orgn., Nov 9, balloon cds (Whittlesey 2, R B-A) and handstamped "10" rate marking with manuscript "20" correction (double rate) on stampless cover to Pennsylvania, corner and edge wear, small stains, accompanied by undated portion of original letter from a man recently arrived in Oregon and describing the end of his Oregon Trail experience through the Blue Mountains to Umatilla and then down the Columbia River through The Dalles, Fine.

(Clackamas) Oregon City, Orgn., Mar 30, balloon cds (Whittlesey 2, R B-A) as transit postmark on small 1852 incoming stampless folded letter, manuscript "Williamsburg, Ind., Jan 24" origin postmark and manuscript "10" rate marking, addressed to "Campaign Town, Marion County, Oregon Territory" (Champoag one assumes) but forwarded to "Salem, O.T." with manuscript "Ogn." and "5" and "Due 15" in total, also advertised with manuscript "adv 2" additional due, accompanied by a handwritten transcription of the letter from a woman to her son and daughter, Fine.

(Clackamas) Oregon City, Orgn., Oct 23, balloon cds (Whittlesey 2, R B-A) ties 1851 3¢ dull red strip of three with 1¢ stamp missing on cover to New Hampshire, accompanied by original 1855 letter from a man recounting detailed news of the Indian Wars that were ongoing in both Oregon Territory and Washington Territory, Fine.

Lot 1122    

(Clackamas) Oswego, Oregon, Apr. 23rd, manuscript postmark (Whittlesey 1 but statehood use) on cover with 1861 3¢ rose cancelled by pen strokes and just tied by the postmark, to Lewiston Washington T'y. so likely an 1863 use since Lewiston did not have a Post Office until later in 1862 and Idaho Territory was created in 1863, a trifle reduced at right, light stains, F.-V.F.

(Clatsop) Astoria, Ogn., Apr 24, balloon cds (Whittlesey 3, R A) and handstamped "Paid 6" in circle rate marking on cover to Norwich New York where marked "Due 4" in blue pen as apparently sent in 1855 just after the transcontinental rate was increased, subsequently forwarded to Cuba New York with Norwich transit postmark and "Forwarded" straight line handstamp and manuscript "3" due along with "Due 7" in total, slightly reduced at left, minor corner wear at right, Very Fine, nice combination of three different rates.
