1796 (Sep. 7) London, England to Philadelphia Pa., folded cover with red London (9.7) cds and manuscript "1/" rating for 1s packet fee, carried by Falmouth packet Princess of Wales from Falmouth Sep. 24th via Halifax Oct. 19th to New York arriving Oct. 26th, New York manuscript "10" cent rating for 60-100 miles inland, docketed as received Oct. 27th, file fold, Fine.

Lot 1169    

1815 (May 2) London, England to Providence, R.I., folded letter with red "Post Paid Withdrawn Ship Letter London" double-circle datestamp on flap and red New York cds and matching "Ship" handstamp with manuscript "53" rate (2 x 17¢ plus 50% war rate surcharge + 2¢ ship fee), F.-V.F., ex-Hahn.
Estimate    $500 - 750.

The Act of October 10th 1814, made it illegal to place an outbound letter on any ship privately, unless the letter had first been presented to the British Post Office and a fee paid equal to one-third of the combined inland and sea packet postage. Upon payment, the letter received the "Withdrawn Ship Letter" handstamp and the sender was allowed to send the letter by any ship of his choice. In that the Post Office was providing no service at all for this little used and unpopular act, it as terminated on July 11th 1815.

Dec 7 1827" cds and matching "Paid to New York" straightline with manuscript "paid 25 Cents / 4½ & 2d" rating, red manuscript "25" cent credit rating, carried by private ship to Liverpool, reverse with "Ship Letter / Liverpool" framed handstamp and red London (1.10) arrival cds, manuscript "1/7" due rating for 8d ship letter rate plus 11d inland postage, Very Fine.

1848 (May 1) New York N.Y. to Francomont, Belgium, blue datelined folded letter endorsed "via Ostend", carried as endorsed by Cunard Line Acadia from Boston May 3rd to Liverpool arriving May 16th, red London (5.17) backstamp transit and manuscript "1/8" debit rating, red Ostend transit backstamp and matching Belgian framed accountancy handstamp, F.-V.F.

(Retaliatory Rates) 1848 (Nov. 1) Antwerp, Belgium to Castine, Me., folded letter written at quarantine grounds near Antwerp by sailing ship captain who crossed the Atlantic through a hurricane and arrived at Antwerp, it was carried privately to London and posted with "Fenchurch St" straightline postmark, red London "Paid, 10 NO 1848" transit and red manuscript "1/-" shilling prepaid packet rating, carried by Cunard Line Cambria from Liverpool Nov. 11 to New York arriving Nov. 25, red "New York 'Ship 34cts Nov 25" entry cds for 10¢ inland postage plus 24¢ packet fee, Very Fine and interesting retaliatory rate cover from Belgium, ex-Winter.

1849 (May 14) Conception, Chile to New York, via Panama, folded letter with black oval "Forwarded By Zachrisson, Nelson & Co., Panama" forwarding agent handstamp, entered mails with "New Orleans Aug 4" cds and matching "Steam / 40" two-line rating handstamp, interesting three-page letter from Lumber Mill operator J. Woodhaus to Joshua Brooks with much focus on the California Gold Rush, Very Fine.

1850 (Jun. 10) "Off Charges, Panama, On Board Steamer Crescent City", folded letter with black two-line "Steam Ship 20" rate sent from the Steamer Crescent City to New Haven, Conn, interesting letter from brother to brother with California Gold Rush content, with interesting anecdote of the George Gordon Association that sailed from New York in February of 1849 bound for the California gold fields via Nicaragua, Very Fine.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

Josiah W. Blake was the leader of a company of prospective gold miners en route to California by way of the route across the Isthmus of Panama.

1850 (Oct. 22) Tapalpa, Mexico to San Diego, Cal., folded letter datelined "Tabsica de Papel en Tapalpa, Oct. 22nd 1850", entered mails with "FRANCO EN / TAPALPA" two-line postmark and manuscript "Obre 26" date and "Franco", endorsed "por San Blass / Y el Paquete de Vapor" at bottom left, red fancy "Forwarded" script handstamp and matching framed "30" rating handstamp, some interesting content including "I have made sale of fifteen thousand dollars worth of Copper since the arrival of the boys and 14000 in the month of Dec last…"; faulty with aging, Fine.
