New South Wales, 1852-55 1d brick red + two 2d chalky blue, tied by grid cancels on 1852 front with one flap to New Zealand from Sydney paying the 5d rate to neighboring colonies with manuscript "1sh" due on arrival, manuscript "Per Mou" & Auckland arrival cds on front, 1d & one 2d lightly touched, Very Fine, a scarce item to New Zealand; signed Bloch. SG No. 48+53.

Victoria, 1853, Queen Victoria ("Half Length"), Ham printing, 3rd Die State (altered), 3d blue, tied by "1V" fancy oval cancel on blue 1854 folded letter to Boston Mass., matching "Melbourne, Victoria, MA 6, 1854" rimless crown datestamp, carried as endorsed by non-contract clipper ship Neleus from Melbourne Mar. 14th to England, red London (6.13) transit backstamp and manuscript "16" debit to U.S., carried by Cunard Line Europa from Liverpool Jun. 17th to New York arriving Jun. 30th, "Boston Br. Pkt. Jul 2" exchange backstamp and matching "21" due handstamp for 16¢ ship postage plus 5¢ inland postage, Very Fine, ex-Risvold. SG No. 14.

The "Neleus" was a steamer (probably steam-assisted sail) that grossed 982 tons burthen. She went out from England with Captain P. Burnett in Oct. 1853 arriving at Melbourne on Christmas Eve. She brought 32 passengers and some merchandise. This letter was carried on her return to London with 131 passengers and 671 bales of wool.

Victoria, 1855, Queen Victoria ("Half Length"), Campbell & Fergusson printing, 3d indigo, large to huge margins, rich distinctive color, in combination with 1856, Queen Victoria, Perkins, Bacon printing, 1d yellow green on 1857 folded letter to Melbourne, tied by two strikes of "4" barred circle handstamp, matching "Sandhurst, Victoria, Ja 2, 1857" oval date stamp, reverse with receiving postmark, Very Fine. Victoria, 1858 6d bright blue (pair) + 1857-61 2d brown violet, tied by numeral "1" grid cancel on 1860 cover from Melbourne to Germany paying the 6d Colonial rate + 8d rate from England to Germany, Very Fine, a lovely cover with all rouletted issues. SG No. 69+73.

Victoria, 1854, Queen Victoria ("Wood Block"), 2s dull bluish green on pale yellow, used with 4d rose, rouletted (35), each tied by "1" barred oval cancel on cover to Madison Wis., matching "Melbourne DE 17, 1858" backstamp, magenta ms. "1/4" one shilling-four pence credit to G.B., carried by as endorsed by non-contract steamship Columbian from Melbourne, red London Paid (2.11) cds, carried by Cunard Line Canada from Liverpool Feb. 12th to Boston arriving Feb. 26th, bold "Br. Packet, Boston, 26 Feb" exchange cds and matching "10" due handstamp for inland postage, Very Fine and scarce use at double the 1s2d rate, ex-Risvold.

The "Columbian" was a steamer owned by The European and Australian Royal Mail Company, and at the time was operating as a British Packet. For this voyage she left Melbourne on 18 Dec 58, and steamed via King George's Sound (25 Dec) Galle (8 Jan 59) to Suez (23 Jan). At Alexandria the letter was picked up by the "Thames" (27 Jan) and taken via Malta (31 Jan) to Southampton (11 Feb).

Canada, 1851, Queen Victoria, 12d black, laid paper, neat target cancel, ample to clear margins, rich bold color, expertly repaired and mounted (rebacked), Fine appearance; with 1983 Friedl certificate. SG No. 4 £100,000 ($123,000).

A FINE AND ATTRACTIVE APPEARING EXAMPLE OF THE 1851 12D QUEEN VICTORIA ISSUE - A CLASSIC CANADIAN RARITY.

On May 14, 1851, a package containing 51,000 twelve pence stamps was sent by the printers Rawdon, Wright, Hatch & Edson of New York to Postmaster General James Morris in Toronto. From this first and only consignment of twelve pence stamps, only 1,510 stamps where issued to 14 different post offices between June 14th of 1851 and December 4th of 1854. With the Ingersoll Post Office return sixty examples, only a mere 1,450 examples where ever sold through the post office, with the remaining backstock eventually destroyed. This issue is considered among the rarest of the British Commonwealth issues.
