1847, 5¢ red brown, four large margins including part of next stamp at bottom, rich color, tied by light blue "Philadelphia, Pa., 5cts, Oct " integral rate cds with second strike alongside, in combination with D.O. Blood 1850, 1¢ bronze on black local acid tied on small cover to New York street address, Extremely Fine, a lovely and rare usage, ex-West.

1847, 5¢ dark brown, large to huge margins showing portion of adjacent stamp at top, deeply blue paper, tied by black grid handstamp and red "Boston, 5cts, Nov 7" cds on 1850 folded letter to Montreal, Canada, manuscript "4½" rate at lower left, red Montreal receiving backstamp, Extremely Fine, a lovely usage to Canada bearing the 1847 5¢ Issue in the Dark Brown shade; with 2013 P.F. certificate.

1847, 5¢ dark brown, three huge margins, clear at bottom, tied by red "6" in circle handstamp, matching red "New-York Aug 24" cds on folded cover to Plattsburgh N.Y., manuscript "Due" and red "5" handstamp to left of stamp; some cover toning, 5¢ small scissors-cut entirely in margin at lower right, Very Fine and scarce cancellation on the 1847 Issue, ex-Caspary, Boker, Mirsky; with 2001 P.F. certificate.
Scott No. 1a    Estimate $750 - 1,000.

Plattsburgh is just over 300 miles from New York City, and therefore required 10¢ postage for the over 300 mile rate. The 5¢ stamp was accepted as partial payment and the cover was marked 5¢ due. A very unusual use with the "6" rate handstamp, which was normally used for inbound ship letters.

1847, 5¢ orange brown, four margins, deep rich color, cancelled by bold strike of blue "Paid" framed handstamp on 1847 folded letter to London, England, matching blue "Philada Pa '5 cts' Dec 30" cds, carried as endorsed by Cunard Line Hibernia departing Boston Jan. 2nd to Liverpool arriving Jan. 16th, red London (1.17) arrival backstamp and manuscript "1/-" shilling due rating; top edge separated, hint of edge toning, F.-V.F., ex-Gibson.

A BEAUTIFUL EARLY USE OF THE 5¢ ORANGE BROWN SHADE FROM THE FIRST PRINTING.

This cover was the subject of an Aug. 2004 Chronicle article by Mirsky noting how two different markings were used by Philadelphia on the same day.
