1847, 5¢ red brown, four full margins, cancelled by central strike of Philadelphia blue numeral "2" in circle fancy cancel, Very Fine; with 2002 P.S.E. certificate.

A RARE EXAMPLE OF THE PHILADELPHIA NUMBER "2" RATEMARKER USED TO CANCEL THE 5¢ 1847 ISSUE.

Philadelphia used a "2" ratemarker on stampless circular rate or drop letter mail usually to indicate postage due.

1847, 5¢ red brown, large margins to in, bright color, cancelled by sharp strike of red "40" in circle rate handstamp, Fine and exceptionally rare strike on the 1847 issue.

THIS IS ONE OF THE FINEST KNOWN STRIKES OF THE RED "40" IN CIRCLE RATING HANDSTAMP.

The "40" rating handstamp was used on transcontinental mail sent at the 40¢ rate.

1847, 5¢ red brown, large margins to just in at upper right, slightly oxidized, clear strike of red Hudson River Mail wavy-line grid in circle cancel, tiny corner margin crease at bottom left, Fine and scarce cancellation, One of the few fancy designs used during the 1847 period.; with 2011 P.F. certificate.

1847, 5¢ red brown, enormous margins all around with framelines of adjoining stamps at top and left, intense shade, criss-crossing pen cancellation, remarkable and Extremely Fine, ex-Mirsky.

There are a total of 31 criss-crossing lines in this pen cancel, which would have required significant time to apply. This stamp was obviously cancelled by a postal clerk with lots of time on his hands and a deep desire to prevent re-use.
