1861 (Jan. 24) Liverpool, England to Wiscasset Me., cover with "Liverpool, JA 24, 61" origin cds and manuscript "3" debit rating to U.S., carried by Allan Line Anglo-Saxon from Liverpool Jan 24th to Portland arriving Feb 3rd, Very Fine and choice strike of this Portland exchange office postmark.

1861 (Feb. 16) New York N.Y. to St. Petersburg, Russia, blue folded cover by Prussian Closed Mail with "New York '23' Feb 16" debit exchange cds to Prussia, endorsed "p Vigo via Ostende" at top, carried by Inman Line Vigo from New York Feb. 16th to Liverpool arriving Mar. 1st, red Aachen (3.2) backstamp transit with large blue manuscript "12/2" debit to Russia, Russian magenta "56" due rating on back, blue J.W. Schmidt & Co. New-York merchants oval, Very Fine.
Estimate    $150 - 200.

The Russian postage due of 56 kopecks marked in magenta pen on the reverse. This consisted of 46 kopecks to cover Prussian debit and 10 kopecks Russian internal fees. Aachen marked "12/2" in bright blue ink to show breakdown of Prussian debit to Russia, 12 silbergroschen "foreign" transit and 2 silbergroschen German transit.

1861 (Mar. 15) Brest, France to Vincennes Ind., gray folded letter bearing France 1859, 80c rose (20) huge margins with strong color, tied by neat "511" lozenge cancel, matching "Brest, 15 Mars 61" cds, light strike of "Am Service" handstamp, red "PD" framed handstamp, red "New York 'Paid 15' Apr 2" exchange cds, Very Fine.

Schmidt & Co. New-York merchants oval, Very Fine, ex-Hahn.

1861 (May 1) Livorno, Sardinia to McIndoes Falls, Vt., cover endorsed "from U.S. Ship Susquehanna" at left with blue "U.S. Consulate, Leghorn" forwarding handstamp, manuscript "2" for double weight (½ to 1 oz.) entered France at Culoz with "Sardaigne, Culoz, 8 Mai, 61" cds applied in Paris, red "Br. Service" framed handstamp and manuscript "36" cents debit to the U.S., carried on Allan Line Canadian II from Liverpool May 10th to Quebec arriving May 20th, "Portland Me '42' 22 May" debit exchange cds, for the 36 cents debit from France plus double U.S. inland, Very Fine and scarce origin from beyond France under the 1857 Treaty handled by the Portland exchange office, ex-Arthur White.
Estimate    $300 - 400.

1861 (Jul. 31) Ayr, Scotland to Geneva Mich., cover bearing G.B. 1856 1s green (SG 19) plate-margin single tied by "Ayr, JY 31, 61" duplex with "27" barred numeral "27" duplex cancel, red London "21/Cents" credit handstamp to U.S., carried on Allan Line Nova Scotian from Londonderry Aug. 8th to Quebec arriving Aug. 13th, by rail to Detroit where neat strike of red "Detroit Am. Pkt., 24 Paid', Aug 16" exchange cds struck, Very Fine and scarce Detroit exchange office cds.
Estimate    $300 - 400.

This Detroit exchange office cds was used from March 1860 until November 1867 (See Allen & Littauer, Chronicle 244, 2014).

1861 (Aug.) United States to London, England, demonetized 3¢ red (U26) star die entire cancelled by manuscript and endorsed "by first steamer. 'City of Baltimore', Augst. 10th", no U.S. markings and apparently carried privately on Inman Line City of Baltimore from New York Aug. 10th to Liverpool arriving Aug. 22st, reverse with "Liverpool, U.S. Packet, AU 22, 61" cds, matching "1/-" one-shilling due handstamp for packet fee, London N.W. (8.22) arrival cds.
Estimate    $300 - 400.

If the letter had been entered in the U.S. mails, it would have been placed in a closed mail bag marked for London and off loaded at the Queenstown stop, thus saving a day to London.

1861 (Aug. 30) Montevideo, Uruguay to New York N.Y., datelined folded letter with black Montevideo (8.30.1861) oval postmark, sent unpaid on Royal Mail Steam Packet Oneida from Montevideo Aug. 30th to Southampton arriving Oct. 1st, red London (10.2) and "1/-" one-shilling due rating, black "24/Cents" debit to the U.S., carried on Inman Line Glasgow from Liverpool Oct. 2nd to New York arriving Oct. 16th, "New York, Am. Pkt. Oct 16" exchange cds and matching "45" due rating (24¢ for the British debit, 19¢ for sea and inland), F.-V.F. and scarce.
