(San Jose) Bedford's Express, complete strike of "COLLECT" straightline handstamp of Bedford's Express on cover front with partial top and bottom flaps to W. Van Voorhies, Secretary of State, San Jose, bottom flap with "April 16. 1851" docketing; light vertical fold toning, F.-V.F.

(San Jose) California Penny Post Co., 1855-59, 5¢ Black on Buff, "To the Penny Post Co." at top, bearing 3¢ dull red (11) horizontal pair, cancelled by manuscript "X" cancels, red "San Jose Cal. May 26" cds to J.W. Sullivan at San Francisco Cal., Very Fine.

This cover is addressed to J.W. Sullivan, a San Francisco newsdealer who also forwarded mail and operated "Mail Bag" collections for delivery.

Express" imprint (San Francisco & San Jose Railroad, Thomas TRE-004) on 3¢ pink (U59) buff entire cancelled by "Monterey Cal Jun 14" cds to Watsonville Cal., docketed "D.S. Gregory, June 15th 1868" at left; light toning and corner stain, Fine and deceptively scarce frank.

(San Jose) Truman & Chapman's Express, two covers, first with black printed frank (TRC-001) with illustration of locomotive and four freight cars on 3¢ pink (U35) entire cancelled by manuscript "November 30/64" postmark to San Jose, accompanied by Truman & Co's Express blue frank (TRE-001a) with illustration of locomotive and two freight cars on 3¢ pink (U59) buff entire cancelled by manuscript "Feb 28th/65" postmark to San Jose, Very Fine pair of illustrated express frank covers.

Truman Expresses were the first express in California that used the railroad for transportation. Truman carried express matter on the San Francisco and San Jose railroad. Wells Fargo forced them off the railroad in 1865.

Sanderson River Bank Nursery shaded ad, "San Jose Route" oval, and three Pacific Union including B.Pulverman shaded ad cover with red printed frank at left, etc.; some faults, F.-V.F. and scarce group.

(San Jose) San Jose Collection, 1848-1900s, collection of 38 covers mounted on album pages, noted includes 1851 postmaster free frank, 1851 unpaid and paid manuscript. "12½" rates, 1850-51 unpaid and paid manuscript. "40" rates, 1850s use of 1¢ and three 3¢ 1851 issue to Philadelphia, three patriotic usages but two appear to have 10¢ added, 1863 used with #68 on U41 entire to Philadelphia, #78 on 1864 cover to England, #146 (2), 150 on cover to Italy, and some better advertising covers including illustrated designs, also includes a group of 6 early letters like 1849 Presbyterian Church, 1852 Jacob B Hoppe who was the first postmaster of San Jose and 1850 purchase agreement for San Jose City Hall; some faults, F.-V.F., an excellent collection worthy of expansion.
