1810 (Mar. 18) London, England to Philadelphia Pa., datelined folded letter with red "Paid, 1810" cds and red manuscript "2/-" Falmouth packet rating, carried by Princess Amelia to New York arriving May 15th, New York "12½" cents inland postage due for 90-150 miles, May 16th receipt docketing; light horizontal fold toning, F.-V.F., Carried on the 7th and final westbound voyage of the "Princess Amelia".

1822 Holmes Hole Mas "Decr 20" From Gibraltar, red double-circle datestamp with red manuscript date and matching "Ship 14½" rating for 12½¢ inland postage plus 2¢ ship fee on 1822 folded letter datelined "Gibraltar Novemr. 2d. 1822" to Providence R.I., Dec. 24th arrival docketing, contents concern shipping news, Very Fine ship letter via Martha's Vineyard.

1822 (Aug. 8) New York N.Y. to Schiedam, Holland, datelined folded letter, carried as endorsed by "Margaret", flap with black "Den Helder Zeebrief" ship letter transit (Van de Linden 952) and rare "Marine Gezuiverd" disinfected handstamp of Den Helder, Very Fine.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

The "Marine Gezuiverd" disinfected handstamp of Den Helder is recorded by Meyer for 1836, Frank recorded only 5 others (his note included).

1835 (Jun. 17) "U.S. Ship Natchez" Rio De Janeiro, Brazil to Portsmouth N.H. via Philadelphia, datelined folded letter endorsed per "Brig 'Mary' Captn. Garwood" at lower left, entered mails with red "Phila, 3 Aug" octagon datestamp and matching Full-Rigged Ship octagon handstamp and 20¾" for 2¢ ship fee plus 18¾¢ inland postage to Portsmouth, letter has some interesting content concerning politics, a duel, etc., Very Fine.

Rothschild endorsed "p Royal William" at lower left, flap with "Liverpool, Ship Letter" two-line handstamp and red London (2.4) cds, manuscript "1/7" shilling rating, Very Fine and rare voyage, Carried on the final of only three round voyages of the "Royal William" for the City of Dublin Packet Company., ex-Hegland, Booth.

Jan. folded letter to Woodstock, Oxon, England, carried privately to Boston, red "Forwarded from Harnden's Boston" oval, carried on Cunard Line Unicorn from Boston Mar. 1st to Halifax where mails transferred to Acadia arriving Liverpool Mar. 25th, Liverpool oval "America, L" handstamp, London (3.26, 3.28) backstamp, "1/-" shilling due handstamp, rimless Woodstock (3.27) arrival cds and forwarded to Park Road, Clapham with manuscript "1/-" due rating; small edge flaws, Fine and scarce voyage, ex-Booth.

Lot 1225    

1843 (Jun. 30) New York N.Y. to Birmingham, England, datelined folded letter sent privately to Boston, carried on Cunard Line Columbia from Boston Jul. 1st and wrecked in fog Jul. 2nd at Seal Island, Nova Scotia, mails transferred to Margaret and carried to Liverpool arriving Jul. 23rd, sharp Liverpool "America, L" oval handstamp and matching "1/" shilling due handstamp, partial Birmingham arrival backstamp; small tape stain top edge, Very Fine and rare voyage, ex-Booth.
Estimate    $750 - 1,000.

"Columbia" ran aground in fog on Jul. 2nd at Black Ledge near Seal Island, Nova Scotia. Cunard's reserve steamer, the "Margaret", set out at once from Halifax for the scene of the wreck, with Samuel Cunard aboard. They succeeded in salvaging not only the passengers and mails, which continued to England aboard the Margaret [arriving 23 July], but also the cargo and movable parts of the ship. This was the final voyage of the "Columbia".

1844 (Nov. 16) Glasgow, Scotland to Philadelphia Pa., datelined folded letter with Glasgow Paid octagon datestamp and red manuscript "1/-" shilling rating, carried by Cunard Line Caledonia from Liverpool to Boston arriving Dec. 7th, closed bag to Philadelphia where blue italic "20¾" due handstamp struck, Very Fine and choice complete strike of this marking, ex-Arthur White.
