Lot 147    

(Naval) 1838-42 (c.) Addressed to Capt. Charles Wilkes U.S.N., Washington D.C., group of 8 folded covers addressed to Wilkes apparently while he commanded the Naval Expedition to the South Seas, forwarded privately to his ship, origins of New York, Pensacola, Flor., Newport, R.I., Charlestown, Ms., and Charlotte, N.C., fresh and Very Fine group.
Estimate    $300 - 400.

The United States Exploring Expedition of 1838-42, commonly known as the "Wilkes Expedition", included naturalists, botanists, a mineralogist, taxidermists, artists and a philologist, and was carried by the USS Vincennes (780 tons) and USS Peacock (650 tons), the brig USS Porpoise (230 tons), the store-ship USS Relief, and two schooners, USS Sea Gull (110 tons) and USS Flying Fish (96 tons). It was of major importance to the growth of science in the United States, in particular the then-young field of oceanography. During the event, armed conflict between Pacific islanders and the expedition was not uncommon and dozens of natives were killed in action, as well as a few Americans.

(1846-1848 Mexican-American War) 1846-1848, Inbound Mail to Soldiers in Mexico, group of 4 comprising New Orleans "10" to Col. Wm. B. Campbell at Monterey, New Orleans "Free" to Col. Wm. B. Campbell of 1st Ten. Regt. at Vera Cruz, Petersburg Va. integral cds with "Free" handstamp overstruck to Capt. Fletcher H. Archer of Petersburg Mexican Vol. at Monterey, and "Waverly Ill" manuscript postmark with "Paid 12" rating to Francis R. Starr of Gen. Worths Div.; some flaws, F.-V.F.

(1846-1848 Mexican-American War) Vera Cruz, Mexico April 12, bold strike of framed postmark and matching "10" rating handstamp on blue folded letter endorsed "Puebla de Los Angeles, Mexico" at top left and datelined April 8th 1848 to Middletown Point, N.J., interesting letter mentioning a recent death and some military matters plus "…We have just received a copy of the N.O. Delta containing an account of the Revolution in France, and the flight of Louis Philippi & the Royal family from Paris…", Very Fine.

(1846-1848 Mexican-American War) Brazos, Oct.3, two-line postmark (Type III) and matching "10" rate handstamp on blue folded cover docketed from "Reynosa Mexico, Sept. 27/47" to Gen. Roger Jones Adjutant General's Office, Washington, D.C., endorsed "Official Business", upon arrival at Washington, D.C. due rating crossed out and "Free" rating added, docketing indicates Isaac W. Patton was acknowledging receipt of commendation; file folds, F.-V.F.

(Forts) (Fort Buchanan, Arizona) 1860 (c., Mar. 15) New York N.Y. to Fort Buchanan, Arizona, New Mexico Territory, light buff cover endorsed "Over Land Mail Via St. Louis" bearing 3¢ dull red (26) tied by "New-York Mar 15" cds; small top edge mend and partial flap, Very Fine and attractive use.
Estimate    $400 - 600.

Fort Buchanan existed for only five years 1856 to 1861 and was part of New Mexico Territory as Arizona was not a separate territory until February 24, 1863. It was under constant threat from Apaches. This cover was carried along the Butterfield Overland Mail route from St. Louis to Arizona.
