Mexico, Wells, Fargo & Co., Mazatlan, Mex., Oct 9, blue oval date stamp cancelling on U.S. 1864, 3¢ pink entire to San Francisco, Cal., matching boxed "Collect" handstamp with pencil "2/-" express rate and black company "Paid Over Our Mexican Coast and California Express - 25 cts" frank at top, Mazatlan "Oct 25" postal boxed datestamp and wreathed "Franco" (Schatzkes 739 & 740); some edge nick and tears, Fine appearance, a rare express and Mexican postal service combination from Mazatlan.
Estimate    $250 - 350.

Lot 2056    

Mexico, Wells, Fargo & Co., Mazatlan, Mex., two strikes on part paste-up cover to New York City, dated "Sep 21" but awaited monthly ship until "Oct 3" departure when it received a second strike, handed over for local delivery with "Boyd's City Post, 39 Fulton St., Nov 10, 1865" cds, pencil "Nov 11, 1865" docketing; most of reverse removed from paste-up removal, F.-V.F., a scarce express and city local usage handled outside Mexican and US mail systems.
Estimate    $250 - 350.

Mazatlan was under French control at this time, so this may explain why Wells Fargo chose not to use the U.S. mail system. The U.S. did not recognize the French government.

Mexico, Wells, Fargo & Co., Mazatlan, Mex., blue oval handstamp with matching "Paid" in oval on 1872 folded letter sheet to San Francisco, Cal., company corner card date stamp and ship endorsement "pr Sacramento" at top, Very Fine, handled outside Mexican and US mail systems and absent Mexican postage contrary to regulations requiring payment, illustrated in Schimmer and Heath Mexican Maritime Mail (page 284), ex-Schimmer; with 1981 P.F. certificate.
Estimate    $750 - 1,000.

Mexico, Wells, Fargo & Co., Mazatlan, Mex., Oct., 17, 1883, two strikes of red oval date stamp tying 1883, 6c Numeral, cons 2783 on green Wells, Fargo Y Cia franked paste-up cover to San Francisco, Cal., reverse with via Guaymas routing notation and violet "Paid" in oval handstamp, traveled by ship to Guaymas and then by rail to destination, Very Fine.
