Mexico, 1856, First Issue, ½r blue, Mazatlan, horizontal single, right stamp with "double lips" variety (double transfer), tied on piece by two strikes of Mazatlan negative eagle seal postmark (Schatzkes 741), large margins all around, Very Fine, choice pair; with 1990 M.E.P.S.I. certificate.

Mexico, 1856, First Issue, ½r blue, Mazatlan, block of 4, boxed Badiraquato postmark on bottom stamps (Schatzkes 748, 200 points), top stamps appear uncanceled, horizontal wrinkle in top stamps and tear affecting upper right stamp, otherwise Very Fine, Badiriquato is a small mining town tucked into the mountains; with 1990 M.E.P.S.I. certificate.

Mexico, 1856, First Issue, 1r yellow, horizontal pair, Mazatlan, wide margins, tied by fancy Copala oval (Schatzkes 753) on docketed 1857 cover front to Mazatlan, left stamp canceled by manuscript, includes a matching usage of a 2r green (Scott 3) on folded letter sheet from same correspondence, F.-V.F.

Lot 2090 ()   

Mexico, 1856, First Issue, 1r yellow, Mazatlan, large margins, tied by mute "0" handstamp with large dot in center (Schatzkes 751 var.) on cover front from Concordia to Mazatlan, F.-V.F., it appears that the mute "0" handstamp of Concordia developed a large dot and inner notch in the device (see Scott 8c usage for similar strike).

Mexico, 1856, First Issue, 1r yellow, Mazatlan, large margins, tied by red Mazatlan "Enero 15" boxed date stamp (Schatzkes 739) on folded letter sheet to Guadalajara, showing incorrect old 1 reales rate accepted (the postal rate had changed December 20, 1856 to 2 reales), accompanied by matching 1857 folded letter sheet usage bearing a 2r green (Schatzkes 739 tying) for the correct rate, Very Fine.
