1853 San Francisco, Cal. to Manchester, England, 1853 folded letter with blue "Hermann Ernst, San Francisco, Upper California" oval handstamp on front and reverse, endorsed "pr Liverpool steamer" and "Postage prepaid in New York", carried privately to N.Y. and entered the mails with red "New York, 19, Dec 14" exchange cds, Liverpool transit and receiving backstamp, Very Fine, ex-Jessup.

1853 (Jun. 18) Nassau, Bahamas to Bordeaux, France via New York, datelined folded letter with enclosed letter bearing perfect bold strike of "Vice-Consulat de France A Nassau, N.P., Bahamas" circular consular handstamp, forwarded to New York with "Forwarded, by, H.W. Newman & Co." three-line handstamp on flap, red "New.York, Am. Packet. Jul 23" exchange cds, carried transatlantic by Pacific, entered mails with red Paris (8.5) cds and Bordeaux arrival backstamp; some faults, Fine and rare use, This is the only recorded example of this French Vice-Consulate of Nassau cachet handstamp.

Lot 229    

1853 (Aug. 24) Glen Mills, Va. to Unter Urbach, Würtemberg, folded letter with manuscript "Waterloo,Va, Augt. 30/53" postmark and "Paid 34¢" rating, red "N. York U.S. Pkt. 'Paid 8' Sep 10" exchange cds, carried by Ocean Line Hermann from New York Sep. 11th to Bremerhaven arriving Sep. 25th, F.-V.F., ex-Winter.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

The Glen Mills post office was closed in July 1851 and moved across the Rappahannack River to Waterloo, Virginia where letter was posted. It was prepaid 34¢, the 1st Bremen Treaty rate to Bremen from Virginia. This rate was reduced to 22¢ nine days before letter posted. New York credited Bremen with 8¢ and sent letter fully paid to destination. Bremen credited 3 silbergroschen to the Thurn & Taxis Post for transit fees to Württemberg. The "Fr.3" marking, although in black ink, showed the 3 silbergroschen transit fee was paid, an uncommon marking used only for about one year.

1855 folded letter from Barranquilla, Colombia to New York, with red oval handstamp "Forwarded By Ramon Leon Sanchez Cartagena, N.G." with a additional "Forwarded By Geo. W. Fletcher Aspinwall, N.G." red oval handstamp on folded letter, bold "Steamship 20" in circle handstamp, Very Fine, rare double forwarder from the Lanman & Kemp find.

1855 (Apr. 21) New York, N.Y. to Ankum, Hannover, orange buff envelope with pencil "15" prepaid rating and red "N. York U.S. Pkt. 'Paid 6' Apr 21" exchange credit cds, carried by Ocean Line Washington from New York Apr. 21st to Bremerhaven arriving May 8th; minor wax seal stain, Very Fine.
Estimate    $150 - 200.

Under the second Bremen Treaty, of the 15¢ prepaid, the U.S. was entitled to 5¢ internal fee and 4¢ sea transit fee since an American contract steamship carried the letter to Bremerhaven. Bremen was entitled to 6¢ of the international fee for transit to Hannover.

1856 (Apr. 25) Edinburgh, Scotland to New York, N.Y., blue folded letter with red Edinburgh (4.25) backstamp and bearing G.B. 1s green, embossed (5), large margins to touched, tied by Edinburgh "131" roller cancel, red Liverpool (4.26) transit and matching "5/Cents" credit handstamp, carried by Cunard Line America from Liverpool Apr. 26th to Boston arriving May 10th, New York red "Paid" arc handstamp; horizontal fold, Very Fine; with 2008 Sismondo certificate.

1856 (Jul. 24) Madeira to Washington, D.C., double-weight light buff cover with enclosed letter from Dr. George Clymer, surgeon on the U.S. Frigate St. Lawrence datelined "San Antonio da Serra. Madeira, July 13th. 1856." to his daughter sent unpaid via British open mail, entered mails with "Madeira, JY 23, 1856" double-arc backstamp, carried as endorsed by African Steamship Co. Niger from Funchal Jul. 23rd to Plymouth arriving Jul. 29th, reverse with "Plymouth, Packet Letter, JY 30, 1856" cds and red London (7.31) transit cds, London manuscript "1.20" debit to U.S. for transit and sea postage, carried by Cunard Line Canada from Liverpool Aug. 2nd to Boston arriving Aug. 13th, "Boston, Br. Pkt., 13 Aug" exchange cds and debit update to "1.40" for $1.40 due, Very Fine and scarce double rate from Madeira.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

London's debit of $1.20 to the U.S. was correct (double 65¢ rate, less 10 cents for U.S. inland). The Boston clerk may have thought it was a ship letter, so added 10¢.

1857, 1858 (Jun. 30, Jan. 26) Boston, Mass. to Clipper Ship Eagle Wing at Hong Kong, China, pair of letters from Theodore Chase to Capt. Robert H. Waters, 1857 (Jun. 30) addressed in care of Messrs Russell & Co. at Canton, China, probably carried transatlantic by Cunard Line Europa departing Boston Jul. 1st to Liverpool arriving Jul. 11th, docketed on reverse "Recd Sept 9th 1857 Hong Kong"; 1858 (Jan. 26) probably carried transatlantic by Cunard Line America departing Boston Jan. 27th to Liverpool Feb. 9th, docketed on reverse to Hong Kong but actually received in New York May 19th upon her return, Very Fine.

A RARE PAIR OF LETTERS TO THE WELL-KNOWN CLIPPER SHIP "EAGLE WING" AT HONG KONG, CHINA.

The "Eagle Wing" was a medium clipper ship built in 1853 at Medford, Mass. of 1,174 tons. She made several passages to China in the 1850s and sailed from Shanghai Feb. 4th 1858 to New York arriving in 103 days, when the second letter was sent. Content concerns business matters including freight account and second letter mentions additional commission fees charged by Messrs. Russell & Co. for procuring freight to New York.
