Bermuda, 1938 Pan American Airway Covers, pair of very scarce FAM 17 Bermuda/US combination frankings both with flight cachet and backstamp; Canada/US/Bermuda three country franking paying for the return trip back to Canada (less than 10 recorded) and cover franked by U.S. 1934, 6¢ Airmail (C19) paying internal air mail rate from NYC to Baltimore, then with U.S. 1926, 10¢ Airmail (C7) tied by "Baltimore Mar 16, 1938" cds paying air rate to Bermuda and a Bermuda 1sh Caravel paying the air rate back to the U.S. (few recorded); light toning on the former, otherwise Very Fine, exceptional usages for this very popular FAM flight.

Bermuda, 1938-39 Bermuda - U.S. 1926, 10¢ Airmail Combination Frankings, group of three covers illustrating different types of usages; unusual 1938 Western World paquebot type usage with Bermuda franking rejected and U.S. postage cancelled on cover to Nassau, Bahamas (a bit soiled), commercial Hamilton Hotel cover with Bermuda 1/6p paying rate on SS Monarch of Bermuda and two U.S. 1926, 10¢ Airmails tied by N.Y. March 20, 1939 cds paying the very scarce double weight air letter rate, and May 1939 incoming U.S. air rate cover to St. Georges West, Bermuda that is refranked and forwarded back by ship with KGVI Bermuda 2½d tied by St Georges cds; few cover flaws, F.-V.F., great and diverse usages of the U.S. 1926, 10¢ Airmail stamp.

Bermuda, 1938 Bermuda - U.S. 1934, 20¢ Transpacific Airmail Combinations, pair of commercial air covers from Bermuda using U.S. airmail routes to the West Indies and South America; Bermuda KGVI 2½d ship rate franking sent from Hamilton April 10, 1938 via N.Y. with U.S. 1934, 20¢ Airmail (C21) tied by N.Y. cds to Half Way Tree, Jamaica (backstamp) and similar from July 1938 with scarce 55¢ air rate to Buenos Aires, Argentina made up of U.S. 1926, 10¢ + two 1934, 20¢ Airmails; later with tone spots around some stamps, F.-V.F., excellent commercial usages showing different air rates at the time.

Bermuda, 1938 Hamilton, Bermuda to New York, N.Y., Hamilton Feb 2, 1938 cds ties various KGVI low values making the 9d air rate to N.Y. on commercial air/special delivery underpaid cover with U.S. 1¢ Bureau + 3¢ Washington, three singles (632+720) making up the prepayment of the special delivery rate and then with Bermuda due mark rated at high 180 centimes that was paid by 36¢ of U.S. due stamps (flaws from cover overlapp) applied to the front, F.-V.F., apparently underpaid by 9d and charged at double penalty rate, though the special delivery portion was correct, an attractive and scarce combination franking.

Lot 95    

Bermuda, 1939 Special Dual Trans-Atlantic First Flight, with first being the Sep 24, 1939 Horta flight to Bermuda, with special cachet and Bermuda arrival backstamp for Sep 26 and then censored with Bermuda CM21 #3 censor mark in blue green and refranked by Bermuda 1sh KGVI pair tied by "Hamilton, 16 Nov, 1939" cds, first flight along FAM 18 route back to the Azores with Nov 20th arrival, Very Fine, a spectacular dual first flight cover, with only four combination frankings recorded.

Lot 96    

Bermuda, 1939 North Atlantic Air Service, May 26, 1939 registered cover from Great Britain to Bermuda that was readdressed, refranked correct registered air rate (2sh3d with rare use of Bermuda KGVI 2sh keyplate for forwarding) and re-registered with Bermuda label to Paris, France, Very Fine, several flights occurred between the U.K., Bermuda and U.S. during the May-June period of 1939 and it is more than likely that this cover was on at least two of these flights, this is the only flight related incoming cover to Bermuda during this period with a high value keyplate used for forwarding to another country in Europe.

Lot 97    

Bermuda, 1939 Bermuda First Flights with Great Britain Forwarding Frankings, three 1939 flight covers forwarded by ship to other countries; June 8 first flight from St. Georges to U.K. and then refranked with KGVI Coronation 1½d to pay ship rate to Sydney, Australia, similar cover, but franked with Bermuda 2sh keyplate for the June 21 flight to the U.K. and then forwarded to Geelong, Australia, and rare August 5, 1939 flight to U.K. (about 10 known) from St. Georges to U.K. and then refranked by G.B. KGVI 1½d to Guernsey (backstamp), Very Fine, a very scarce trio as several covers from this flight exist with a G.B. KGVI ½d applied by Francis Field to confirm that the planes had arrived, but not for forwarding the covers to other destinations like the trio above.

Bermuda, 1939 Pan American Airway First Flight - Three Country Franking, Jun 21, 1939 cover with Bermuda 2sh KGVI keyplate paying the proper air rate to the UK, then G.B. 1½d KGVI for ship rate to Que Que, Southern Rhodesia and then refranked by Southern Rhodesia 1½d KGVI tied by "Que Que, Jul 15, 1939" cds for ship rate back to Bermuda with N.Y. (8/6) and St. Georges (8/10) backstamps to prove the round trip, Very Fine, the only three country franking recorded for this flight.

Bermuda, 1939-40 Bermuda - U.S. 1938, 6¢ Eagle Airmail Combinations, pair of commercial air covers from Bermuda; March 20, 1939 tourist cancel ties Bermuda KGVI 2½d paying ship rate and U.S. 1938, 6¢ Airmail (C23) from the Princess Hotel to the St Francis Hotel in San Francisco, Cal. and a rare registered air cover franked by KGVI 1½d (2) and 2½d tied by Hamilton April 3, 1940 cds and with U.S. 1926, 15¢ + 1938, 6¢ Airmails, two singles of each (C8+C230 paying air rate to Buenos Aires, Argentina (backstamp), Very Fine, a very scarce franking and usage of this stamp on Bermuda combination cover.

Bermuda, 1940-41 Bermuda - U.S. 1938 10¢ Prexie Combinations, pair of covers with 10¢ Prexies used for paying commercial air rate and special delivery combinations with Bermuda stamps; Bermuda KGVI 1½d and U.S. 10¢ Prexie (815) both tied by April 13, 1940 Penguin slogan cancel with 10¢ paying the special delivery fee with fee claimed handstamp applied on arrival, ship rate was higher than franking and so postage due was charged with Bermuda and U.S. markings, and KGVI Bermuda 1½d and 6d tied by light Oct 1941 cds on air cover to Brooklyn, N.Y. (on reverse noted that it was sent from someone serving at APO 802) with cover readdressed back to Bermuda with U.S. 10¢ Prexie applied and tied by Brooklyn cds paying air rate; later with cover edge opening tears at top, otherwise Very Fine, scarce usages.
