Lot 157

Madagascar, 1882 U.S. Government Mail Service, cover addressed to Rev. Aas in Morondava, with red manuscript "Kind c/o V.F.W. Stanwood, Esq., U.S. Consular Agent", endorsed "Haster" (urgent); light cover edge wear, F.-V.F., the only recorded example from this mail service.
Estimate    $750 - 1,000.

The U.S. Government Mail Service is known to have existed in 1882, but no information is available about its lifespan. The service provided that letters were sent once a month by runners from the capitol to Majunga on the north coast and to Morondava on the west coast. The minimum postage to Majunga was 33 cents. As the postage for mail to Morondava was double that, it can be assumed that the letters went by ship from Majuna to Morondava and not by runners direct from the capitol to the west coast.
