(Alaska) 1869 (Aug. 15) Cleveland Oh. to San Francisco Cal., forwarded to Kodiak, Alaska Territory, Russian America, orange Sherman House corner card cover bearing 3¢ rose, grilled (94) tied by cork cancel duplexed with "Cleveland O. Aug 15" cds to Henry Back, Co. G. 2nd U.S. Artillery, Alcatraz Island, San Francisco Harbor, readdressed and forwarded to "Kodiak, Alaska Territory, Russia America", matching Sherman House letterhead enclosure docketed in pencil "I receipt this letter on the 8th day of April 1869 at Fort Kodiak, Alaska Ter, Henry Barry"; reduced at left, faults.
Estimate    $1,500 - 2,000.

Although the Post Office Department authorized mail service between Sitka, Alaska Territory and San Francisco in July 1867, only four or five covers can be proven to have originated in Alaska Territory before 1870. Possibly fewer covers are known which arrived in the same time period as this letter was written.
