1916, 1¢ Dark Green on Gray, Die 2, unused unsevered vertical strip of three, reverse of each with preprinted Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul Railway Co. message; light toning mostly on reverse, F.-V.F. and rare multiple.

This is the second large known multiple, there is also a strip of four known.

1917, 1¢ Black on White Tissue Paper, Lincoln Vignette Essay, circular 33mm dia. vignette of Lincoln on 48 x 56mm white tissue paper, mounted on backing paper, Very Fine. Scott No. UX28E.

THE ONLY RECORDED EXAMPLE OF THIS LINCOLN ESSAY FOR THE 1917 1¢ POSTAL CARD ISSUE.

This was an attempt to adapt for postal card use a vignette patterned after and very similar to a vignette used in the production of U. S. currency.

1917, 1¢ Black on White Tissue Paper, Lincoln Vignette Essay, Lincoln facing right vignette essay in oval 21 x 25mm on 36 x 40mm white tissue paper, mounted on backing paper, background consists of horizontal shading lines, and considerable portion of bust, Very Fine. Scott No. UX28E.
USPCC No. S40E-B    $5,000.

THE ONLY RECORDED EXAMPLE OF THIS LINCOLN ESSAY FOR THE 1917 1¢ POSTAL CARD ISSUE.

This was the first seriously considered design, and was later reduced, reversed to face left, the shading of the background eliminated and the figure cut down to exclude much of the bust. When thus amended it became the accepted design.

1917, 1¢ Black on Glazed Paper, Lincoln Vignette Essay, Lincoln facing left vignette with background fully routed on 44 x 68mm semi-glazed white wove paper, Very Fine. Scott No. UX28E.

ONE OF ONLY RECORDED EXAMPLES OF THIS LINCOLN ESSAY FOR THE 1917 1¢ POSTAL CARD ISSUE.

The other recorded example of this essay has a black "Dec 20 1916" handstamped on reverse.

1917, 1¢ Black on Glazed Paper, Stamp Die Essay, Typographed die essay of completed stamp design except untrimmed around border and inside vignette oval, and with an albino impression of label lettered "This Side of Card for Address" on 150 x 73mm glazed white wove paper, reverse with BEP blue "807124" and black "Jan 24 1917" handstamps, Very Fine. Scott No. UX28E.
