Harnden & Co, Boston" oval handstamp and matching "Paid / H & Co" fancy handstamp at top right, carried by Sarah Sands from New York May 11 to Liverpool arriving May 30th, black "Postage Paid To Destination. -by- Harnden & Co., Liverpool", Liverpool arrival cds and matching red "1" shilling packet rating, bold red London Paid (6.1) arrival tombstone, Very Fine and choice Boston Harndens use carried on the Second Return Voyage of the "Sarah Sands", ex-Arnell.

"Unicorn" Maiden Voyage, Liverpool May 16th - Boston June 3rd 1840, folded letter from London, England to Salem Mass. with red tombstone "Paid My 13, 1840" handstamp and rimless "Paid Ship Letter, London, My 13, 1840" datestamp with red manuscript "8" pence prepaid rating, entered U.S. mails with red "Boston Ms., Ship, Jun 4" cds and 8 cents postage due for 2¢ ship fee plus 6¢ inland postage for less than 6¢; some fold separation, Very Fine.
Estimate    $3,000 - 4,000.

THIS VOYAGE MARKED THE INAUGURATION OF CUNARD LINE SERVICE.

The "Unicorn" made the First Transatlantic Voyage of the Cunard Line in anticipation of a feeder service she would perform between Pictou, Nova Scotia and Quebec and to insure facilities were ready at Boston for the inaugural mail voyage of the line in July 1840. This was the maiden voyage of the "Unicorn".
