F.W. Schmidt & Co., New York, red endorsement "Pr. Express Mail" and "Double" at top, and "Paid" at bottom left, upon arrival "Forwarded Through Gilpin's Exchange and Reading Room and Foreign Letter Office, N-York." oval handstamp struck on flap, transatlantic to London, entered mails with red London (1.3.1839) backstamp and manuscript "3/2" 3s2d due rating, Very Fine.

1838 (Dec. 15) New Orleans La. to London, England via New York, datelined folded letter addressed in care of Messr. Goodhue & Co. of New York to Baring Brothers at London, partial red "New Orleans" cds and matching "Paid" handstamp with "75" cent express mail rating, endorsed "Express Mail", red "Forwarded By, Goodhue & Co., New York" oval handstamp on flap, sent by private ship, entered mails with "Liverpool, Ship Letter" two-line handstamp and manuscript "1/7" rating, red London (1.26.1839) arrival backstamp, Very Fine and choice with Goodhue forwarders oval.

A RARE TRANSATLANTIC EXPRESS MAIL USE VIA NEW YORK TO LONDON.

Letter sent by U.S. Express Mail from New Orleans at the single 75¢ express mail rate (three-times the normal letter of rate 25¢) to forwarding agent Goodhue & Co. in New York.

1839 (Feb. 20) Guelph, Upper Canada to Beeston, England, folded letter with manuscript "Guelph UC, 20 Feby, 1839" postmark, red manuscript "Paid 25 Cents, Packet 12½, B. 7" prepaid rating for 25¢ postage to N.Y., 12½¢ freight money fee for sailing ship and 7d Canadian postage, red "New-York Mar 1" exchange cds, carried by sailing ship from New York to Liverpool, "Liverpool/Ship Letter" backstamp and manuscript "1/6" due 1s6d rating for 8d ship fee plus 10d inland postage; edge wear, F.-V.F., The earliest of only four recorded freight money covers from Guelph, U.C., ex-Hahn.

1839 (May 13) Charleston S.C. to Greenock, Scotland, datelined folded letter with red "Charleston S.C., May 13" cds and matching paid at center, two manuscript "25" cent ratings over red crayon "1d" ratings, one at left for 25¢ steamship freight money fee and one at right for 25¢ inland postage for over 400 miles to New York, red New York (5.17) cds, carried as endorsed by Pioneer Steamship Liverpool from New York May 18th to Liverpool arriving Jun. 2nd, flap with "Liverpool / Ship Letter" two-line handstamp and ms. "1/8" due 1s8d rating for 8d ship letter fee plus 1s inland for 230-300 miles, Scottish "½d" toll road tax handstamp; vertical filing wrinkle, otherwise Very Fine.

THE EARLIEST RECORDED FREIGHT MONEY LETTER FROM CHARLESTON.

Letter prepaid 25¢ inland fee to New York (upper right) plus 25¢ freight money fee for a steamship (upper left). This was the third return voyage of the Transatlantic Steamship Co. "Liverpool".

1842 (Jan. 27) Kirkwall, Orkney Islands to Rochester N.Y., datelined folded letter with red "Paid at Kirkwall" framed handstamp and matching "Kirkwall, 27 JN, 1842" framed backstamp, red manuscript "1/-" one shilling rating for transatlantic packet fee, Edinburgh red "Paid, Feb 1, 1842" transit cds, carried by Cunard Line Caledonia from Liverpool Feb. 4th, damaged by hurricane it put into Cork for repairs and returned to Liverpool Feb. 17th, the carried by Cunard Line Acadia to Halifax arriving Mar. 7th where American mails were transferred to the Cunard Line Unicorn to Boston, Very Fine and scarce voyage carried by three different Cunard vessels, ex-Bryan Wood.

1842 (Feb. 26, Mar. 3) Letters disrupted due to the Cunard "Caledonia" and "Columbia" Voyages, two folded letters (Feb. 26) Newport R.I. to Lincolnshire, England with red "Newport R.I. Feb 26" cds and "Paid" handstamp with ms. "10" rating to Boston, carried by Cunard Line Unicorn from Boston Mar. 1st to Halifax arriving Mar. 7th, then by Cunard Line Acadia from Halifax to Liverpool arriving Mar. 25th, Liverpool "America / L" oval and "1/-" shilling due handstamps, Wisbeach (3.27) arrival backstamp (Mar. 3) London to Philadelphia, light red London (3.3) Maltese cross and red ms. "1/-" shilling packet rating, carried by Cunard Line Columbia from Liverpool Mar. 4th and broke a shaft in transit about 450 miles out from Halifax, and had to proceed under canvas the remainder of the voyage, limping into Halifax Mar. 25th, then carried by Unicorn from Halifax Mar. 27th to Boston, red "Boston Ms., Ship, Mar 28" cds with ms. "20¾" rating for 18¾¢ inland postage plus 2¢ ship fee, F.-V.F. and scarce pair of interrupted Cunard steamship mail.

Since "Caledonia" was unavailable for the scheduled March 1st 1842 sailing from Boston, "Unicorn" was dispatched from Halifax at 5 PM on Feb. 25th to proceed to Boston where she arrived at noon of the 27th. Unicorn took out the mails and passengers on the scheduled Mar. 1st sailing, departing Boston about 3 PM. She arrived in Halifax and exchange mails with the Cunard Line Acadia, taking her U.S. mails to Boston.

1842-46, Cunard Line Contract, T.W. Ward Name of Boat Stamps, group of 4 covers, each with red "Forwd. By T.W. Ward, Boston" oval and matching ship directional handstamp comprising "Pr. ACADIA" 1842 Boston to London, "Pr. BRITANNIA" 1842 New Orleans to Paris via New York; "PR CALEDONIA" 1844 New Orleans to London; and "PR CAMBRIA" 1846 New Orleans to London; each with file fold, F.-V.F. and scarce group.
Estimate    $500 - 750.

The forwarding agents T.W. Ward of Boston used a set of stamps for five Cunard vessels operating the mail packet contract in 1840s to identify the vessel they wanted the letter to be sent on.

Edmonton Co., Bombay" forwarder's handstamp, red London (5.7) backstamp, red "INDIA" oval handstamp and manuscript "3/6" 3s6d due rating, remailed with red London "Paid" (5.17) Maltese cross and red manuscript "1/-" shilling rating for transatlantic packet, Liverpool (5.18) oval, carried by Cunard Line Acadia from Liverpool May 19th to Boston arriving Jun. 1st, Boston red "Ship 6" clamshell due handstamp, Very Fine and early use from Manila.

"Hibernia" Maiden Return Voyage, 1843 (Apr. 8) Vera Cruz, Mexico to London, England via Boston, datelined folded letter with red "BOSTON" straightline handstamp and manuscript "1/-" shilling transatlantic packet rating, carried on Cunard Line Hibernia from Boston May 16th to Liverpool arriving May 28th, docketed as received May 29th, Very Fine; with 1970 Robson Lowe authenticity letter.
Estimate    $500 - 750.

This "Boston" straightline was given by the G.P.O. London to their representative in Boston (who may have been the British Consul) for use on letters handled by the British packets operating between Boston and Liverpool.
