1848 (Sep. 18) Paterson N.J. to Burton-in-Kendal, England, folded letter with red "Paterson N.J. Sep 18" cds and matching "Paid" straightline with manuscript "29" rating (24¢ American packet plus 5¢ inland postage), carried by Ocean Line Washington from New York Sep. 20th to Southampton arriving Oct. 5th, red London (10.6) backstamp and manuscript "1/-" due rating for transatlantic packet discriminatory fee, red manuscript "Missent to" and blue "Kendal, OC 6 1843" cds adjacent, "Burton.W" (10.7) arrival backstamp, Very Fine.
Estimate    $400 - 600.

The commencement of the American Packet service on June 1, 1847 led to Britain imposing a "Discriminatory Rate" on mails landed at Southampton with all US prepayment ignored and the One Shilling Packet Rate charged to the addressee. Eventually, continued use of this discriminatory rate on American packet letters caused Americans to retaliate with a double sea postage on letters carried by British contract vessels.

(Retaliatory Rates) 1848 (Oct. 2) Liverpool, England to Boston Mass., gray folded letter with black "Postage Paid to Destination by Harnden & Co. of Liverpool" framed handstamp, red "Paid at Liverpool, OC 21 1848" framed handstamp and matching "1/-" prepaid rating handstamp, carried as endorsed by Cunard Line Hibernia from Liverpool Oct. 21st to Boston arriving Nov. 3rd, Boston red "24" retaliatory due rating handstamp for transatlantic packet, Very Fine and scarce Harndens retaliatory use.

"34" for 10¢ inland postage over 300 miles plus 24¢ packet fee, Very Fine and scarce retaliatory rerating.

(Retaliatory Rates) 1848 (Nov. 14) Antwerp, Belgium to Castine, Me., folded letter with red "Anvers 14 Nov" origin cds and manuscript "24" décimes prepaid rating on reverse for all transit fees, manuscript "1/8" 1s8d Belgian credit to G.B., London and Liverpool (11.17) transits, carried by Cunard Line Britannia from Liverpool Nov. 18th to Boston arriving Dec. 6th, red "Boston Ms. 'Ship' Dec 6" cds and matching "29" retaliatory rating handstamp for 5¢ inland plus 24¢ packet fee, Very Fine.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

Letter carried on the 22nd of 25 Cunard mail voyages to the U.S. under the retaliatory order.

(Retaliatory Rates) 1848 (Nov. 28) Antwerp, Belgium to Castine Me., blue folded letter with red "Antwerp, 29 Nov, 1848" cds and small "PD" framed handstamp with manuscript "3/4" rating, red London (11.30) and Liverpool (12.1) transits, carried by Cunard Line Niagara from Liverpool Dec. 2nd to Boston arriving Dec. 16th, red "Boston Ms Dec 16" cds and matching "34" handstamp updated "58" cent rating handstamp, Very Fine, This was the last westbound sailing to Boston during the retaliatory period and the latest recorded use of the Boston "58" cent rating handstamp.
Estimate    $400 - 600.

This cover was prepaid double the 1s10d G.B.-Belgium through rate per Treaty of 1844. Boston due rating of 58¢ for double the 5¢ letter for under 300 miles plus double the 24¢ retaliatory packet fee.

Dayton, 4th Auditor, Treasury Dept. in care of forwarder, with "Dusseldorf, 29/8" origin cds and red manuscript "8" rating, endorsed "franco", Aachen "P." circled handstamp and red crayon "fr. 10" (10d or 110 pfennig) credit rating, oval "Forwarded by George Peabody, London" backstamp, red London "Paid" (8.31) transit cds, black "19 / Cents" debit handstamp to U.S., carried by Cunard Line Europa from Liverpool Sep. 1st to Boston arriving Sep. 12th, "Br. Packet, Boston 12 Sep" exchange cds and "24" due handstamp, later overstruck in Washington D.C. with two strikes of red "FREE" rating handstamp as addressed to the Treasury Department; minor ink erosion, Very Fine and scarce transatlantic "Free" use from Germany.
Estimate    $150 - 200.

The Anglo-Prussian treaty of Oct. 1846 required full payment to the U.S. frontier, indicated by the "Franco" and "P." in circle.
