Lot 325    

1850 (Sep. 22) Manila, Philippines to Boston Mass. via London, gray folded letter datelined "Manila. 22d Sept 1850" and endorsed "via Marseilles", sent by packet to London forwarding agent, carried by Coastal Steamer Achilles to Hong Kong (9.29), Singapore (10.6-7), Penang 10.9) and Galle (10.15), then by P& O Haddington departing Oct. 17th via Aden (10.29), Suez (11.5), and then by the Ligne d'Egypte Lougsor to Alexandria (11.8) and Marseilles (11.17), entered mails with London "L.S., 19 NO 19, 1850" Maltese cross datestamp and black "3 / Cents" debit handstamp, carried as endorsed by Collins Line Arctic from Liverpool Nov. 19th to New York arriving Dec. 4th, New York "24" due rating handstamp, Very Fine, This was carried on the Maiden Return Voyage of the Collins Line Arctic.

Lot 326    

1850 (Dec. 28) New Orleans La. to Paris, France, fresh blue folded letter with red "New Orleans La., Dec 28" cds and matching "Paid 21" rating handstamp for the 21¢ treaty rate for carriage by American packet, intended for the sailing of the Collins Line Baltic, but the New Orleans postmaster, realizing that the letter had missed that sailing, sent it directly to Boston for the sailing of Cunard Line Canada that departed Jan. 7th for Liverpool arriving Jan. 18th, Boston red manuscript crossed out prepaid rating and "16" cents credit back to New Orleans, red London (1.28) transit backstamp and matching "Colonies / &c. Art. 13" framed handstamp, Calais (1.29) entry cds and matching "15" decimes due handstamp; slight upper right paper loss, otherwise Very Fine and choice use, ex-Feldman.
Estimate    $500 - 750.

ONE OF ONLY THREE COVERS KNOWN WITH SUCH A TRANSATLANTIC PACKET BACK CREDIT.

1851 (Apr. 20) Canton, China to Boston Mass., gray datelined folded letter "Canton April 20th 1851" dateline, "Hong-Kong, 23 AP 1851" double-arc backstamp and manuscript "2/11" 2s11d due rating, endorsed via "Marseilles", red London (6.15) transit backstamp and ms. "54" cent debit rating, carried by Ocean Line Hermann from Southampton Jun. 18th to New York arriving Jul. 2nd, manuscript "75" due rating, F.-V.F.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

The earliest Boston 75¢ due handstamp is December 1853.

1851 (Jul. 6) Northfield House, Scotland to Buffalo N.Y., datelined folded letter with olive "Duffus" and "Eldin, JY 9, 1851" double-arc backstamps, bearing Great Britain, 2d blue (4) strip of six, mostly full margins, cancelled by "133" grid cancels for prepayment of the 1 shilling packet rate, Liverpool (7.11) backstamps with red "PAID" and "5 / Cents" credit handstamps, carried by Cunard Line America from Liverpool Jul. 12th to Boston arriving Jul. 24th, red "Br. Packet, Boston '24' Jul 24" exchange cds; some edge wear, Very Fine and scarce franking.

1851 (Aug. 14, Sep. 16) Mass. to Calcutta, India Care of Baring Bros., London, two covers, first blue folded letter from Clinton Mass. with Boston "5" debit handstamp, carried by Cunard Line Europa from Boston Sep. 4th to Liverpool arriving Sep. 15th, London red (9.15) arrival backstamp and "1/-" due rating handstamp, Baring Bros. red "Viâ SOUTHAMPTON" straightline, remailed with red "London Paid, SP15, 1851" cds and red ms. "1/-" shilling rating, Calcutta "G.P.O." (11.1) arrival backstamp; second blue cover from Boston with pencil "24" cent prepaid transatlantic packet rating, Boston red "Paid" and "19" credit handstamp to G.B., missed Cunard Line America and apparently held for Cunard Line Niagara from New York Sep. 24th to Liverpool arriving Oct. 6th, Baring Bros. red "Viâ MARSEILLES" straightline, remailed with red "London, Paid, OC 8, 1851" cds and red manuscript "2/3" two-shilling three-pence rating, reverse with framed Bombay (11.6) transit and red framed Calcutta G.P.O. (11.13) arrival, Very Fine correspondence pair of letters sent via Southampton and Marseilles.

1852 (Mar. 30) Northampton Mass. to Berlin, Germany, gray cover with "Northampton Ms. Mar 30" cds with matching "Paid" handstamp with ms. "29" cent Bremen mails rating, missed Cunard Line Niagara departing Boston Mar. 30th, partial strike of red "New-York, Apr 7" transit cds and red "PAID ALL" straightline, carried by Cunard Line Europa from New York Apr. 7th to Liverpool arriving Apr. 18th, red "America/über Bremen" handstamp, Hanover P.O. in Bremen red "Fr. 2 5/12" gutebroschen credit handstamp, magenta "7" credit for British (3 sgr), Belgium (½ sgr) and German (3½ sgr) internal transit; some edge wear, Very Fine and rare Bremen Mails use.
Estimate    $500 - 750.

The "Paid All" handstamp is a New York marking indicating that the letter was prepaid to Berlin. Fully prepaid letters to destinations beyond Bremen between July 1st 1851 and Aug. 15th 1853 are scarce. The Hanover Post Office in Bremen red "Fr. 2 5/12" gutebroschen credit handstamp is know used only from April to June 1852.

Lot 331    

1852 (Jul. 25) Rudolstadt, Germany to Reading Pa., cover with "Rudolstadt, 7 25" double-circle datestamp sent unpaid with red crayon "7" grote rating, Bremen (7.28) backstamp with matching large "7" grote debit handstamp to U.S., carried by Havre Line Franklin from Havre Aug. 4th to New York arriving Aug. 16th, partial strike of "New York '27' Aug 16" exchange debit cds, F.-V.F.
Estimate    $300 - 400.

Bremen struck the large stylized "7" handstamp to show debit in Bremen currency (grote) to the U.S. Postage due comprised 20¢ American postage (5¢ inland plus 15¢ sea postage) and 7¢ German transit postage.

1852 (Aug. 9) Savannah Ga. to Paris, France, buff cover with perfect bold strikes of "Savannah Geo, Aug 9" cds with "PAID" and double-circle "5" rating handstamps for British open mail rate by British packet, New York black "British/Packet" handstamp, carried by Cunard Line Niagara from Boston Aug. 18th to Liverpool arriving Aug. 29th, red London (8.29) backstamp, entered mails with red "Etats-Unis Paq. Brit., Paris" (8.31.52) cds and black "12" décimes due handstamp, Very Fine and choice early use of the New York "British Packet" two-line handstamp.
Estimate    $300 - 400.

The "British/Packet" marking is believed to have been struck at New York during August 1852-April 1853. It is known in red and black ink. Dick Winter had recorded only 17 examples.

Oct 25" cds and bearing 12¢ black (17) horizontal pair, large margins to just in, each stamp cancelled by bold honeycomb grid cancel, red Boston "19" credit to G.B. handstamp, carried by Cunard Line America from Boston Oct. 27th to Liverpool arriving Nov. 7th, red London "Paid" (11.8) arrival tombstone; some edge wear, Very Fine, ex-Bryan Wood.

Singapore to Philadelphia Pa., gray folded cover with "Singapore" framed backstamp and manuscript "1/" 1s due rating, endorsed "Via Southampton", red London (11.20.1852) transit backstamp, due rating crossed out and "40" cent debit rating, carried by Cunard Line Niagara from Liverpool Nov. 27th to Boston arriving Dec. 11th, "Boston, Br. Pkt. Dec 12" exchange cds and matching "45 Cents" rating handstamp; top flap separated and some ink erosion, Very Fine.
