Wells, Fargo & Co., Sac. City, Mar 4, double oval date stamp (Leutzinger type 11-5) on 1853 3¢ Nesbitt entire to San Francisco, with Blue Company Printed Frank at top, Very Fine and choice.

Controversy still exists over the significance of the "Blue Franks". Many believe that it was a steamship frank, as they came into existence when the steamship cancels disappeared in 1854, while others have conjectured that they may have denoted a special service.

Express, San Francisco, blue oval handstamp with matching oval "Paid" on 10¢ green (U18) buff Nesbitt entire to Sanbury Delaware, Oh., indicia cancelled by "New-York, Nov 29" cds, original letter datelined "San Francisco, Nov. 5, 1856" with some interesting content "…I shall not start this steamer as fare is high. I can go for half in the next steamer of 20th inst. as there is opposition going out at that time and are selling tickets at half prices…"; small edge tears and wear at top, partial flap, Fine, ex-Mader.

Wells, Fargo & Co., Victoria, Mar 10 (British Columbia & Vancouver Island), blue oval datestamp cancels 10¢ green (U40) entire with black Wells Fargo Paid frank to San Francisco Cal., blue "Post Office, Victoria V.I." crown oval handstamp, indicia also cancelled by Circle of Vs cancel duplexed with partial San Francisco cds, "Victoria March 5/69" docketing at left; reduced slightly at right, fresh and Very Fine, ex-R.V. Carr, Wilkinson.

Wheeler's Express, La Porte, clear blue circular handstamp (WHE-100) on 1864 La Porte deed bearing a 50¢ Conveyance, part perf (R54b), carried by Wheeler to the Sierra County courthouse in Downieville, Very Fine, rare with only five examples of this handstamp recorded in Thomas.
