Kappus, N. Mex., Sep 8, 1910, Type 1 duplex with four-bar killer ties 1¢ Franklin on post card to Grant Mich., picture side with real photo titled "A Western Humane Society" showing cattle branding, Very Fine and choice, The earliest of only two recorded examples of this postmark.

"San Jose N.M., June 5 1878", manuscript type 1 postmark on 3¢ green entire to Chester Vt., enclosed letter datelined "San Jose, New Mexico Terr. June 1878" by William Steele to his mother mentions of his travel plans in the territory and where to direct his mail; reduced slightly at right, Very Fine, One of only 3 Recorded Manuscript Type 1 Postmarks. Todsen R8.

Santa Fe, N.M., Feb 4, discernible cds on cover bearing 3¢ dull red (26), corner nick, canceled grid cancel to Anamosa Iowa, original four-page enclosure from miner at Ortiz Mine at Old Placers datelined "Pleseir, Jan. 25, 1861" mentioning being in the mountains during the harsh winter…the Indians are comiting considerable depridations hear but I think with the proper precausion thear will be but little danger. Thear was a man hear some 10 days since. He was murdered about 25 m. from haer. He had not any money when he left. Somle think the Mexicans murdered him becose he did not pay his bill. They taken his clothes off him. I regreted after I heard of his death I had not gave him money. Had he been a sober man I should have done it, F.-V.F.

Oct 24 '64, double-circle datestamp with matching four-ring target cancel over red "Canada / Paid 10 Ct" two-line exchange credit, matching "Due" and "3" forwarding rating on 1864 orange cover from Canada with red "St. Catherines, C.E., SP 14" cds to Sante Fee N.M. and forwarded to Augusta Ills., endorsed "Via St. Louis Mo.", reverse with "Suspension Bridge, N.Y., Sep 15" transit cds; top edge nick, F.-V.F. and scarce incoming Canada forwarded use.

Sante Fe N. Mex Jul 17, bold 33mm cds with matching "FREE"rating handstamp crossed out and rerated "5" cents due on buff cover addressed to Hon. Ross Wilkins, M.C., Detroit Mich; cover with overall toning and a few minor flaws, Fine and very scarce, ASCC lists the EKU for this marking as Jul 17, 1853.
Estimate    $400 - 600.

Wilkins was a Federal Judge and not a Member of Congress and as such was not entitled to receive mail free.

(New York) New York, N.Y. to Providence R.I., 1816 (Mar. 30), datelined folded letter with red "New-York, Mar 30" cds and red manuscript "51" rating (double the 17¢ rate for 150-300 miles plus 50% surcharge), Very Fine and scarce use on the last day of the War rates.

(New York) Westfield N.Y., Jun 16, sharp strike of blue cds with matching "Paid 3" rating handstamp on orange cover to Hillsdale Mich. prepaid with coin showing clear impression, advertised with blue "Jul" and due "1" circled handstamp, Very Fine and interesting use, ex-Mayer, Hahn.

New York, Jan 4, clamshell postmark and large red manuscript. "10" rating on Dec. 31st 1801 folded letter to Bordentown N.J., forwarded with perfect bold strike of "Tren. N.J, Jan 12" First Federal cds and red manuscript. "forwd 8" rating totaled to "18" cents due, interesting letter content with congratulations to Burgess Allison for resuming his school post, the sender Charles Gobert's brother-in-law is back from Guadeloupe leaving for China soon as supercargo, etc., Extremely Fine and choice forwarded use.
Estimate    $300 - 400.

The addressee, Burgess Allison (1753-1827) was a native of Bordentown, N.J. and studied at Rhode Island College. He became pastor of a Baptist congregation and founder of a classical boarding school in his hometown. After he retired from his school in 1796, he devoted his energies to invention and the improvement of machines, among them the polygraph, physiognotrace, and paper ruling machine. John Isaac Hawkins shared with Allison a passion for scientific experiment and together they patented an improved method for making paper from cornstalks. When his financial resources plummeted, Allison resumed his Bordentown boarding school post in October 1801 and accepted the local pulpit. This letter congratulates.

Lot 129    

(Ohio) Columbus, Ohio, Jan "9", black 25mm circle of 17 torches postmark, with manuscript day and matching "10" cent rating on 1817 folded letter to Urbana Oh., Very Fine and rare.
Estimate    $750 - 1,000.

A RARE EXAMPLE OF THIS FANCY COLUMBUS STAMPLESS POSTMARK WITH 17 TORCHES SIGNIFYING OHIO'S ADMITTANCE AS THE 17TH STATE.

This postmark was recorded in black ink from January to September 1817, and red from Oct. 28 to Dec. 28, 1817. Ohio was the 17th State in the Union.
