Lot 392 ()

Hawaii, 1857, 5¢ manuscript surcharge on 13¢ dark red, unused (without gum), Type I (Clark) numeral with long flag, three close margins, in at top, Fine and rare; with 1959 P.F. certificate.
Scott No. 7    $7,000.

A RARE SOUND UNUSED EXAMPLE OF THE 1857 5¢ ON 13¢ PROVISIONAL SURCHARGE.

There was a shortage of 5¢ stamp just after the transition from Postmaster Whitney to Jackson around the start of 1857. This necessitated the 5¢ provisional manuscript surcharge, with most being made by Jackson's clerk, Alvah Clark (Type I) having a numeral with a long flag, and the rest by Jackson (type II) having a numeral with short flag. New supplies of the 5¢ 1857 Issue (Scott 8) on thin white wove paper were received at the end of June 1857.

Realized: $2,000
