New Zealand - 1873 Chalon Issue, Perf. 12½, Wmk. NZ

Lots 1442-1447

Lot 1442 o

New Zealand, 1872, Queen Victoria "Chalon Head", 1d brown, perf 12½, inverted and reversed N Z watermark as often found, light barred oval cancel, strong color and late impression - a characteristic of this late N Z watermark printing, natural pre-printing paper fold, Very Fine, extremely rare and missing from even the most advanced collections; with 1999 B.P.A. and 2014 Odenweller certificates. Scott No. 45. Campbell Paterson No. A1s.
SG No. 140    £8,000 ($10,510).

AN ATTRACTIVE EXAMPLE OF THE 1873 1D BROWN PERF 12½ WITH "N Z" WATERMARK - A GREAT CHALON HEAD RARITY WITH ONLY A FEW KNOWN TO EXIST.

The 1d brown on NZ watermark paper is so elusive that this issue was not discovered until 1891. It's existence was doubted at the time however the plate wear on this issue could not be accounted for and would be nonexistent on the earlier printings (and in a different color). No unused examples are known and only two multiple are recorded - a rejoined pair and an intact pair on cover.

Realized: $5,000

Lot 1444 o

New Zealand, 1872, Queen Victoria "Chalon Head", 1d brown, perf 12½, N Z watermark, barred "Headquarters" in oval cancel, exceptional centering, rich color, Extremely Fine, a controversial cancellation on this rare issue - offered on it's own merits; with 1938, 1985, 2013 R.P.S.L. (first two stating genuine & last calling the cancel a forgery), 2012 R.P.S.N.Z. (stating cannot be certified as genuine) and 2014 Odenweller (stating genuine) certificates. Scott No. 45. Campbell Paterson No. A1s.
SG No. 140; £8,000 ($10,510)    Estimate $1,000 - 1,500.

The accompanied certificates render conflicting opinions as to the cancellation. The "Headquarters" cancellation device was reportedly altered removing the "Headquarters" name from the device prior to issuance of this stamp and used in Tauranga. Robert Odenweller asserts that this device, like many handstamps issued, had a back-up duplicate device that was not altered and was used on this stamp.
