New Zealand, 1871, Queen Victoria "Chalon Head", 2d orange vermilion, perf 12½, Large Star watermark, position R. 18/5, well centered with bright color, tied by "5, Otahuhu, A" oval cancel, matching "Otahuhu, Nov 18, 74" cds below on cover to Brighton, Parnell, partial Auckland (11.18) transit backstamp; partial flap and small opening tears, Very Fine and scarce local use. Otahuhu and Parnell are both today regarded as suburbs of Auckland, although Otahuhu is 8 miles to the south east of the city and in 1874 would have been regarded as a small town in its own right. Parnell is the oldest Auckland suburb, established in the 1840s.
