New Zealand, 1871, Queen Victoria "Chalon Head", 2d orange vermilion, perf 12½, Large Star watermark, position R. 18/5, well centered with bright color, tied by "5, Otahuhu, A" oval cancel, matching "Otahuhu, Nov 18, 74" cds below on cover to Brighton, Parnell, partial Auckland (11.18) transit backstamp; partial flap and small opening tears, Very Fine and scarce local use. Scott No. 40a. Campbell Paterson No. A2s (5).
SG No. 134    Estimate $400 - 600.

Otahuhu and Parnell are both today regarded as suburbs of Auckland, although Otahuhu is 8 miles to the south east of the city and in 1874 would have been regarded as a small town in its own right. Parnell is the oldest Auckland suburb, established in the 1840s.

New Zealand, 1871, Queen Victoria "Chalon Head", 2d vermilion, perf 12½, Large Star watermark, two singles, used with 6d pale blue (136), tied by two strikes of "N, 1" barred oval duplexed with "Nelson, JU 5" duplex on blue blue 1873cover to London, England, endorsed "via Brindisi" at top left, red London Paid (8.4.73) arrival cds; bleach aging and small tear, Fine and scarce franking. The 10d rate for ½ oz. rate via Brindisi was effective Sep. 6th 1871 to Jan. 2nd 1873, when the rate was lowered to 9d but the change was not widely publicized.
