AN EXCEPTIONAL COMMERCIAL USE OF ONE OF THE RAREST PREXIE ISSUE SOLO USAGES IN EXISTENCE.

Prepaid 19¢ for double the 3¢ first class rate plus 13¢ special delivery fee, which was in effect from November 1, 1944 to December 31, 1948.

1938, 19¢ Presidential, tied by "Boston Mass." roller cancel, purple "Boston, Mass., Back Bay Annex, Apr 24, 1953" cds on H.E. Harris & Co. large manila insured cover to Indianapolis Ind., text "Contents: Merchandise or Catalog - Third Class Mail" and "Insured" at bottom left; reduced slightly at bottom and missing flap, Very Fine and scarce solo use.

Cover prepaid 19¢ for the 4¢ third-class rate (3-4 ounces) plus 15¢ insurance fee ($10-$25). Rate in effect January 1, 1952 through January 1, 1957.

1938, 20¢ Presidential, pair used with 7¢ Prexie (812), all tied by "Richfield Pa., Apr 1, 1947" duplex on live baby chicks parcel to Burnsville N.C., Apr. 3th arrival cds, parcel prepaid 32¢ for 7 pound parcel plus 15¢ special handling fee, Very Fine.
Scott No. 825    Estimate $1,500 - 2,000.

Live chicks had to be sent via Special Handling per regulation on the day they were hatched and delivered within 3 days. Note the "Baby Chick, Date of Hatch" label. Special handling service was designed to give parcel post items the same handling and expeditious delivery as first class mail.

Lot 1410    

1938, 20¢ Presidential, used with 10¢ Prexie (815), tied by "Baltimore Md. Jun 24, 1942" duplex on legal-size airmail cover to Jewish Internee in Vichy French Detention Center in France at the 30¢ per ½ oz. airmail rate, censor tape at left, red crayon "P.S.A." marking indicated that addressee could not be found, "Retour A L'Envoyear" handstamp and returned to sender, Very Fine.

Vichy French Detention Centers were existing camps that were indiscriminately filled with German anti-Nazis (Communists, German Jews, etc) in 1939. Following the 1940 defeat, and the 10 July 1940 vote of full powers installing the Vichy regime, these camps were filled with Jews, first with foreign Jews, then indifferently with foreign and French Jews. The Vichy government would progressively hand them up to the Gestapo, and they would all transit via the Drancy internment camp, which was the last stop before concentration camps in the Third Reich and in Eastern Europe and the extermination camps.

1938, 20¢ Presidential, used with 10¢ Prexie (815), tied by "New York, N.Y., Oct 5, 1943" machine cancel on airmail cover from Italian Internee at Missoula, Mont. to Italy at the 30¢ airmail rate, signed by internee on front and back, purple "Immigration Detention Camp, P.O. Box 1539, Missoula, Montana (U.S.A.)" three-line return address backstamp, censored by POW censors in New York and "Examined by 618" censor tape at left, Very Fine and scarce Italian Internee use.

F., Jun 27, 1941" duplex on legal-size airmail cover to New Celdonia at the 40¢ airmail rate, New Caledonia censor tape at right tied by "Nouvelle, Calédonie" circular censor handstamp; slightly rough opening at left, otherwise Very Fine and scarce war-time use to New Caledonia.

(Mid-West Sta), Registered, Mar 30, 1943" cds backstamp on legal-size cover to local address, several auxiliary markings and backstamps including "Return Receipt Requested", "Notice Sent" and "Return to Writer" straightlines, Very Fine and rare.

ONE OF THE RAREST PREXIE SOLO USES IN EXISTENCE, THE 22¢ REGISTERED LOCAL USE WITH RETURN RECEIPT FEE.

Cover prepaid 22¢ for two-times the 2¢ local rate, 3¢ return receipt fee and 15¢ no indemnity registry fee. The rates were in effect through March 25, 1944. This solo use was missing from the great Suffet collection.
