U.S.S. Housatonic, manuscript endorsement on cover bearing 3¢ red rose (65) pair, intense shade, s.e. at right, tied by bold "Philadelphia Pa., Aug 3, 1863" cds, matching "U.S. SHIP" straightline on cover to Mrs. Joseph W. Congdon at Wickford R.I., Very Fine and choice use, ex-Gibson.
Estimate    $500 - 750.

On February 17, 1864, the Confederate submarine "Hunley" sank a blockader, the USS "Housatonic" off Charleston S.C., marking the first wartime sinking of a ship by a submarine. The addressee was one of 21 officers and 129 men rescued by the "Canandaigua" following the sinking of the "Housatonic". The February 16th use was posted one day before the USS "Housatonic" sunk. The Congdon correspondence is known however virtually all the covers are addressed from the Housatonic to Congdon's wife in Long Island.

Washington Artillery Letter of Service for Officer C. N. False Signed by Four of the Company's Officers, one page, 8.25" x 10.5", on Head Quarters, 5th Company, Battalion Washington Artillery letterhead, datelined "Camp Farewell near Cuba Station, Ala, May 6, 1865", C. N. False enlisted on May 26, 1861 in New Orleans as an Artificer and mustered into the 5th Company of the Washington Artillery. The document certifies that he was transferred from the Orleans Guard Battery to the 5th Washington Artillery and was present at engagements including Buzzard Roost, Resaca, Dallas, Pine Mountain, Kennesaw Ridge, Peach Tree Creek, Atlanta, Jonesboro, Dalton, Overhall Creek, Murfreesboro, Nashville, Spanish Fork and Perryville. The document is signed by his Washington Artillery officers including Captain C. H. Slocomb, commander of the battery, 1st Lieutenant W. C. D. Vaught, 1st Lieutenant A. J. Chalaron, and 2nd Lieutenant Charles G. Johnsen. The document has been mounted to a backing sheet and there are splits in the folds and occasional staining, Fine.

U.S. Ship uses during Civil War, group of 9 comprising four Philadelphia "U.S. Ship" uses including one with 3¢ #65 tied by the handstamp; one with Baltimore blue "Due 3" in circle use endorsed "U.S. Gun Boat "Wissahichon" Mississippi River" and "Ship Letter"; one with 3¢ #65 pair endorsed "U.S.S. "Mingae" "; cover endorsed "U.S.S. "Canandaiguas" bearing 3¢ #65 tied by Port Royal 1864 duplex, etc.; some mixed condition, F.-V.F.
