The Nelson cancellation corresponds to the known usage as the only recorded cover has a Nelson cds. Also, the stamp has the typical comb perforations.

New Zealand, 1867, Queen Victoria "Chalon Head", 3d lilac, perf 12½, Large Star watermark, strip of four, used with 1864, 2d blue, plate II, block of four and single (S.G. 114), and 2d blue, plate II, retouched (114 var., R. 18/3), all tied on piece by Wellington numeral "7" barred ovals; block with some wrinkling on right side, F.-V.F. and most unusual, ex-Antipodes, Corinphila (September 1988, lot 3585), DuBois (Hiroaki Inoue), Matthew Bennett (May 2007, lot 2303); with 1988 Holcombe certificate. The certificate and prior auctions called one of the 2d singles as plate I showing intermediate wear, but is it actually plate II retouched (position R.18/3).

New Zealand, 1867, Queen Victoria "Chalon Head", 3d lilac, perf 12½, Large Star watermark, full strike of "Coromandel" barred oval cancel, small tear and crease at bottom, Very Fine appearance, a very rare second Maori War cancellation, ex-Agabeg. Scott No. 33.
SG No. 117    Estimate $200 - 300.

Robson Lowe mentioned that he had never seen this cancellation on cover.

This letter overpaid by 1d the 8d rate for ¼ oz. letter via Suez and Marseilles effective Feb. 1st 1861 to Dec. 31st 1871.

New Zealand, 1867, Queen Victoria "Chalon Head", 3d lilac, perf 12½, Large Star watermark, used with 1871, 6d pale blue (136), each tied by "01" thick barred oval, matching "Oamaru, NO 29, 72" origin backstamp on cover to France, magenta "P.D", red "Poss. Ang. V. Suez, Alexandrie" entry cds (2.10), the reverse with several indistinct French cds's; some minor aging and repaired tiny edge flaws, Fine and unusual mixed-issue franking, ex-John Woolfe, Spink (October 2006, lot 336), Greg Francis, Spink (July 2014, lot 1378). Scott No. 33. Campbell Paterson No. A3d (3).

At this date there was no English Packets taking mail to Marseilles, the service having been terminated and mail was being sent via Brindisi. Although this cover is endorsed via "San Francisco" it appears to have been crossed out and it certainly did not go by this route. The December mails left Sydney on December 31st 1872 and Melbourne on January 2nd 1873 aboard the "Bangalore". The mail reached Galle on January 22nd and Suez on February 8th. The Southampton mail was transferred to the "Massilia" at Alexandria on February 11th and the "via Brindisi" mails went on the "Poonah" on February 10th.

New Zealand, 1867, Queen Victoria "Chalon Head", 3d lilac, perf 12½, horizontal pair, Large Star watermark, used with 1864, 6d red brown (122), each tied by numeral "5" barred oval, matching "Dreymouth, MR - 15, 71" cds backstamp on 1871 cover to Govan, Scotland, magenta "Registered" at top and left, various registry numbers, Hokitika (3.18) and Christchurch (3.25) transit backstamps, red London Registered (5.30) transit oval also ties 6d, reverse with Glasgow (5.31) and Govan (5.31) arrival cds; edge wear and soiling, partial back flap, Fine and scarce registered use.
