New Zealand, 1864, Queen Victoria "Chalon Head", 6d red brown, perf 12½, Large Star watermark, tied by full brownish "O 57" barred oval handstamp of Kakanui on 1870 cover to Mount Union, Ohio, carried per Wonga Wonga departing Auckland (7/8) via Honolulu entering U.S. with "San Francisco, Cal., 10, Sep 6" integral rate cds, reverse with Dunedin & Auckland transit backstamps; some cover soiling, F.-V.F., a very rare usage from Kakanui (P.O. opened 4/1/1866 and renamed Maheno in 1871). Scott No. 36.

N.Z., JU-9, 69" origin backstamp on cover to Glasgow, Scotland, red "Registered" double-arc datestamp, Glasgow (8.13) arrival backstamp; small edge nick at top, Very Fine and scarce registered use to Scotland. Scott No. 37a. Campbell Paterson No. A6m (4).
SG No. 125    Estimate $1,000 - 1,500.

Cover prepaid 1s 6d for one shilling registry fee and six pence per ½ oz. letter rate to the United Kingdom via Suez and Southampton. The registry fee was lower from 1s to 6d on January 12, 1870.
