Australian States: New South Wales, 1858 (Jul. 10) Sydney, New South Wales to New York N.Y. via Panama, mourning cover bearing New South Wales, 2d blue and 1s rose vermilion (31), each canceled by "N.S.W." oval duplexed with "Sydney, 58 JY 10" cds, manuscript "Exceeds ½ oz." at right, carried by private ship via Panama, railroad across Isthmus, then steamship to New York where "Steamship 20" circular handstamp struck for double the 10¢ steamship rate, docketed "Recd Oct. 30. 1858" on reverse; some edge wear, Very Fine and attractive mourning cover use.
Estimate    $500 - 750.

This cover was stamped for 1s2d rate via Southampton, but underpaid as exceeded ½ ounces and sent via Panama instead.

Australian States: Victoria, 1858 (Sep. 20) Sandhurst, Victoria to San Francisco Cal. via Panama, blue folded letter bearing Victoria, 1s blue (Sc 18), 1d green 'Emblems' (Sc 37), each tied by numeral "4" barred circles, matching "Sandhurst, Victoria, SE 20, 58" rimless oval, Melbourne (9.21) transit backstamp, carried by private ship direct to Panama, then by ship to San Francisco, entered mails with "San Francisco Cal., Dec 29, 1858" cds and matching "20" due handstamp for 20¢ steamship rate; edge wear and soiling, Fine.
Estimate    $500 - 750.

This cover was stamped for 1s1d rate, insufficient for either the 1s2d rate or 1s8½d rate to California. As a result, sent direct to Panama.

Australian States: Victoria, 1858 (Sep. 21) Melbourne, Victoria to Baltimore Md. via Panama and New York, blue folded letter bearing Victoria, 1s blue, margins to touched, tied by numeral "1" barred circle, matching "Melbourne, SE-21 58" backstamp and framed "Detained for "2d" Postage" handstamp, red "G.P.O. Melbourne, Insufficiently Paid" oval handstamp, private ship to Panama, across the Isthmus by railroad, contract steamship to New York where "Steamship 10" circular due handstamp for 10¢ steamship rate struck, Very Fine.
Estimate    $500 - 750.

Letter was underpaid for the 14 pence rate via Southampton to the United States border. Since the additional 2 pence was not paid, it was sent via Panama.

Australian States: Victoria, 1860 (May 17) Melbourne, Victoria to New York N.Y. via Panama and New York, tissue paper cover bearing Victoria, 1d yellow green, 1s blue, tied by numeral "1" barred circles, matching "Melbourne, MY 17, 60" backstamp, red "G.P.O. Melbourne, Insufficiently Paid" oval handstamp, underpaid 1d for P&O Benares via Southampton as endorsed, red manuscript "8" pence rating crossed out, sent by private ship to Panama, across Isthmus by railroad, then contract steamship to New York where "Steamship, 10" circular handstamp struck, Very Fine.
Estimate    $500 - 750.

This cover was underpaid 1d for the 14d rate via Southampton route, so sent across the Pacific to Panama.
