1881 (Jun. 25) New York, N.Y. to Melbourne, Victoria, forwarded to Sydney N.S.W., cover bearing 6¢ pink (186) horizontal pair, tied by "New-York, Jun 25 '81" duplex, pink "San Francisco, Jul 2" transit backstamp, carried by PMSC Australia transpacific, Melbourne (8.1) arrival backstamp, forwarded with Victoria, 2d brown (142), tied by bold "Melbourne, AU 2, 81" duplex with "Victoria" barred oval to Sydney, New South Wales, reverse with Sydney (8.4) arrival cds; some edge wear, Very Fine and scarce mixed franking use, ex-Gibson.

Australian States: New South Wales, 1882, 1885 New South Wales Printed Matter to the United States, group of two comprising 1882 (Apr. 5) Sydney, N.S.W. unsealed cover endorsed "Prices Current" to New York N.Y. bearing N.S.W., 1d red tied by duplex; and 1885 Gundagai, N.S.W. to Boston Mass. endorsed "pamphlet only" bearing N.S.W., 1d red tied by "46" sun burst radial, partial strike of Sydney red "Paid/All." circular handstamp (only two recorded by Wynn on printed matter only), Very Fine exhibit pair.

1882 (Jun. 24) New York N.Y. to Sydney, New South Wales, legal-size cover bearing United States, 90¢ carmine (191), used with 2¢ vermilion (183) two singles, and 10¢ brown (209) single and two pairs, all tied by "New-York Jun 24 '82" duplex cds on preprinted envelope to Sydney, New South Wales, endorsed "Via San Francisco", transcontinental railroad to San Francisco, carried by PMSC City of New York transpacific, Sydney (7.31) arrival backstamp; small faults, 2¢ and 90¢ removed for cleaning and replaced, F.-V.F.; with 1996 R.P.S.L. and 1997 P.F. certificates.
Estimate    $7,500 - 10,000.

AN EXCEPTIONAL $1.44 FRANKING PAYING TWELVE-TIMES THE 12¢ TREATY RATE TO AUSTRALIA. THE EARLIEST DOCUMENTED USAGE OF THE THE 1879 90¢ CARMINE.

Since the Australian colonies did not charge postage due on either non-treaty or treaty mail, the United States "Paid All" markings required by the postal treaties were redundant and often not applied.

There are only two recorded 90¢ Banknote frankings to Australia. The other example is Ex-Braus, Mercedes and dated October 8, 1883.

Australian States: New South Wales, 1882 (Dec. 16) Sydney, New South Wales to Waterbury Conn., cover bearing New South Wales, 2d blue, strip of four, each tied by Traveling P.O. circular cancels, Sydney (12.16) backstamp and purple "PAID ALL" sans-serif oval, manuscript "4" pence debit rating, carried by City of New York from Sydney to San Francisco, San Francisco (1.25) backstamp and matching "8" circular due handstamp, Waterbury (1.30) arrival backstamp; edge wear, right 2d rounded corner, F.-V.F.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

Postal Treaty provided mail paid one rate or more but overweight to be forwarded - with receiving country to keep postage payable. Note credit was given for 2d "overpayment".

1883 (May 10) Chicago Ill. to Sydney, New South Wales, forwarded to Melbourne, Victoria, legal-size cover bearing United States, 3¢ blue green (207), nine stamps and 10¢ brown (209), tied by grid cancels duplexed with "Chicago Ill., May 10" cds, San Francisco (5.16) transit backstamp, carried by City of New York transpacific, Sydney (7.7) arrival backstamp, forwarded to Melbourne paid by New South Wales, 6d Lilac (57) tied by "Sydney JY 7, 1883" cds, Melbourne (7.9) arrival backstamp; some wear, one 3¢ and 10¢ faulty, F.-V.F. and scarce mixed franking use, ex-Mercedes.
Estimate    $400 - 600.

Cover with impressive franking overpaying by 1¢ three-times 12¢ treaty rate to New South Wales, although the UPU provided for free forwarding, Australia was not yet a member and therefore this forwarded cover required additional postage. The New South Wales 6d stamp paid three-times the 2d forwarding rate.

The Sydney "Paid All" with serifs oval marking struck in purple is recorded from November 1876 to January 1884.

Australian States: New South Wales, 1885, 1891 Sydney "Paid All" uses to the United States, two covers, 1885 (Feb. 25) Haymarket N.S.W. to Penn Yan N.Y. bearing N.S.W., 6d lilac and with purple Sydney "Paid All" sans-serif oval handstamp; 1891 (Jun. 13) Sydney N.S.W. mourning cover to Wolf Creek Oreg. bearing N.S.W., 1s maroon (82) and with large "PAID ALL" circular handstamp, later some edge wear, F.-V.F. pair.

Australian States: Tasmania, 1886 (Jun. 12) Deloraine, Tasmania to Butte City, Montana, blue cover bearing Tasmania, 2d green, 6d lilac, each tied by bold numeral "25" barred oval, matching "Deloraine, Tasmania, JU 12, 86" cds, Launceston (6.12) transit backstamp, carried by ship Alameda from Sydney Jun. 17th to San Francisco, reverse with San Francisco (7.11) transit and matching "U.S. Charge to Collect/5 Cents" due handstamp, pink Butte City (7.14) arrival backstamp and U.S., 5¢ Postage Due pencil cancelled; no bottom flap, edge nick and tear, F.-V.F. and colorful.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

Sent less than 3 weeks before Tasmania's Postal Treaty with the United States became effective - Although treaty was in effect when cover arrived in San Francisco, postage due was collected.

Australian States: New South Wales, 1886 (Sep. 9) Sydney, New South Wales to New York N.Y., cover bearing New South Wales, 6d lilac, two singles for double the 6d treaty rate, each tied by "N.S.W." oval duplexed with "Sydney, SP 9, 86" cds, purple "PAID ALL" non-serif oval, carried by Alameda from Sydney to San Francisco, magenta red "San Francisco, Paid All, Jan 29" exchange cds, reverse with red San Francisco (10.2) transit and New York (10.8) arrival cds; top edge tear, Very Fine.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

The Sydney "Paid All" non-serif oval marking struck in purple is recorded from July 1883 to April 1889. The ovals were sometimes applied in transit at Sydney to covers originating in other Australian Colonies.

Australian States: Queensland, 1888 (Jan. 7) Brisbane, Queensland to Oregon Railway & Navigation Co., Oregon, cover bearing Queensland, 2d gray blue (85) strip of three, tied by three strikes of "Brisbane, Queensland, JA 7" cds, framed "Deficient Postage =6/Fine =6" framed handstamp, carried from Sydney by Ship Alameda, San Francisco (2.19) transit and "U.S. Charge/To Collect, 12 cents" handstamp, reverse with Portland (2.22) arrival cds and United States, 2¢, 10¢ Postage Dues (J16, J19) tied by manuscript cancel; some toning and faults, Fine.
Estimate    $150 - 200.

Queensland's Postal Treaty did not call for fines provided one rate was prepaid. San Francisco properly rated cover 12¢ due, all of which was retained by the United States.
