Lot 155    

(Marin) Angel Island, Cal., Nov 5, 1880, clear cds (Williams unlisted) on 1876, 3¢ green entire to Warrenton, Va., canceled by small quartered cork handstamp, docketing at left; small tear at top, Very Fine, a short-lived second type date stamp known used between November 1880 and March of 1881, only two examples known.

Lot 156    

(Marin) Mill Valley, Cal., Jun 23, 1892, first type cds (MRN-1410) on cover to Cloverdale, franked with 1890, 2¢ carmine tied by quartered cork handstamp; cover opening tear at top, otherwise Very Fine, an extremely rare first period postmark with only two recorded.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

The other example sold in our 2009 Westpex sale for $725 hammer.

(Mariposa) Bear Valley, Nov 1, blue manuscript postmark (MAR-140) on cover to East Corinth, Vt., franked with manuscript canceled 1857, 10¢ green, type III, with enclosure from different correspondence, Very Fine.

(Mariposa) Mariposa, Cal., Jan 13, 1872, blue octagon date stamp (Williams unlisted) on cover to Baltimore, Md. with dove & ribbon address panel, franked with 3¢ Banknote tied by matching target handstamp, "Due 3" in circle handstamps, with original enclosure, Very Fine, a rare unlisted example of Mariposa's second handstamp postmark (photo on web site).

(Mariposa) Maxwell's Creek, Cal., January 28th, 1853, manuscript postmark (Williams unlisted) bearing town name written by sender, on cover to Richmond, Va. franked with manuscript canceled 1851, 3¢ dull red, right margin horizontal strip of four, docketing tying strip; stamp and cover flaws, F.-V.F., the only known manuscript postmark usage from Maxwell's Creek shortly before the introduction of the first handstamp.

Lot 162    

(Mariposa) Washington Flat California, Merced River, February the 23, 1857, dateline on folded letter addressed to Vermont and carried completely outside the mails, lengthy 3-page letter tells of getting $1,200 for a claim and wanting to sell the current claim for a $1,000, coming home for a visit next spring, and the prices he pays for supplies brought to his door, Very Fine (photo on web site).
Estimate    $100 - 150.

Washington Flat, on the north side of the Merced River above Bagby, was a very small mining camp from 1850. In 1859, John Fremont built a dam at Ridley's Ferry that flooded out all the remaining miners.

Lot 163    

(Mariposa) Wyatt's Store, Cal., Oct 30th 1860, neat manuscript postmark (MAR-2180) and matching "Paid 10cts", with "Via Panama" routing endorsement at lower left, to Vermont, interesting three page mining letter enclosed datelined from "Merced River"; repaired opening tear at right at right, handsome Very Fine appearance, a very rare Mariposa postmark.
Estimate    $250 - 350.

(Mendocino) Anderson, Cal., Jul 21, cds (Williams no postmarks recorded) on 1875 cover to Hope, O., franked with 3¢ Banknote (tiny tear) tied by target handstamp, with lengthy original enclosure; slight rough opening at left, Very Fine, the only recorded postmark from Anderson (photo on web site).
